The IND vs NZ three-match ODI series will start on January 11 at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara.

India will take on New Zealand in a three-match ODI series, starting with the first ODI in Vadodara on Sunday, January 11. This is first international assignment for India as well as for New Zealand in 2026. The ODI series will see the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli after a month’s gap.

India will be led by Shubman Gill, while Michael Bracwell will lead the Kiwis. Gill was named India’s ODI captain before the series against Australia and he lost his maiden ODI series as captain.

However, this is his first ODI series as a captain at home and he would be keen to take his team to win. The IND vs NZ ODI series will also mark the beginning of the road for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027.

The last time both these sides faced each other in ODIs was in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final, where the Men in Blue went on to beat the Kiwis and win the tournament. Meanwhile, the last time the Kiwis defeated India in an ODI match was back in 2022 when India toured New Zealand.

New Zealand defeated India in the first of the three ODIs. The next two ODIs were abandoned due to rain. That Indian team looked a lot different from the current Indian team. Shikhar Dhawan was the captain of the side on that tour. The likes of Umran Malik and Yuzvendra Chahal were part of that squad as well, none of whom are in the reckoning in the current Indian ODI squad.

New Zealand, on the other hand, were led by Kane Williamson. The bowling attack had the likes of Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry and Tim Southee. Incidentally, none of these players are part of the current Kiwi ODI squad. Southee announced his retirement from all formats, while Williamson has retired from T20Is. He is still playing Tests and ODIs, but is not a part of the squad for this series.

Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and asked India to bat first. On the back of fifties from Shikhar, Gill and Shreyas Iyer, India notched up a competitive score of 306/7. Southee and Ferguson took three wickets each for the Kiwis in that game.

In response to India’s total, the Kiwis chased down 307 inside 48 overs. New Zealand’s charge in the chase was led by Tom Latham, who scored an unbeaten 145. He was ably supported by Williamson, who scored an unbeaten 94 as the duo added an unbeaten 221-run stand to help the Kiwis win the contest.

IND vs NZ head to head in ODIs

Talking about the head to head for both sides, the two teams have played 120 ODI matches, with India winning 62 games while New Zealand 50. The Kiwis have won just 8 ODI games against India in India.
