Shubman Gill sustained a neck injury while batting in the first test in Kolkata. The batter was taken off the field and didn’t return, eventually getting ruled out of the match. There were a lot of speculations related to his availability for the second test as he travelled with the team to Guwahati as well.
Some reports claimed that Gill was desperate to play but team management didn’t want to risk him. The BCCI also stated that the captain will head to Mumbai to consult a doctor and in his absence, Rishabh Pant will lead the team.

“Team India captain Shubman Gill, who suffered a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa, has been ruled out of the second Test in Guwahati.
Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test and was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of the day’s play. He was kept under observation and discharged the next day. He travelled to Guwahati on 19th November, 2025.
Unfortunately, he was not fully fit to feature in the 2nd Test and will head to Mumbai for further assessment of his injury. Rishabh Pant will lead the team in the 2nd Test in Gill’s absence,” stated BCCI.
In the absence of Gill, India would be under pressure as they are already 1-0 down in the series and also the fact that they will be without their key batter. Either of Sai Sudharsan or Devdutt Padikkal is expected to replace him in the XI.
