IND vs SA: Why did Shubman Gill miss tonight's clash?

Shubman Gill got out for 28 runs in the third IND vs SA T20I in Dharamsala.

Indian Cricket Team and South Africa Cricket Team are set to lock horns in the fourth T20I of the five-match series on Wednesday, December 17. Ahead of the encounter, the Suryakumar Yadav & Co. suffered a big blow as vice-captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the encounter.

India’s vice-captain was part of the playing XI in the first three games; however, failed to make a mark with the bat. The right-handed batter got out for four runs in the first encounter, which India won by 101 runs. In the second clash, he bagged a golden duck, where India failed to chase down a 214-run target and lost by 51 runs.

In the third T20I, the 26-year-old look good touch, adding 28 runs and also stitched 60-run stand with Abhishek Sharma for the opening wicket. India also chased down a 118-run target in the clash by seven wickets to gain a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

However, Gill’s struggle with the bat has become a hot topic of discussion among Indian fans and cricket experts. Many have questioned his spot in the T20I side amid his continuous struggle in the shortest format. Notably, Gill has failed to hit any fifties in T20Is in 2025.

Why is Shubman Gill absent from the fourth IND vs SA T20I?

As per the reports by Cricbuzz, Gill has been ruled out of the fourth T20I between India and South Africa due to a foot injury. Earlier, Axar Patel was also ruled out of the series with illness. Pacer Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the previous game due to personal reasons.

Meanwhile, Gill sustained a neck injury in the first test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Due to the injury, he was ruled out of the test and ODI series against the Proteas. Later, he made a comeback in the T20I series.

Moreover, the fourth T20I was delayed due to weather, as fog affected the start of the match. As per the latest report, the toss will take place at 7:30 PM IST after an inspection of the conditions. The encounter is a do-or-die clash for the visitors to keep their hopes of series victory alive.
