India must complete their highest ever run chase to qualify for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2026.
India are playing the final Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup 2026 against West Indies at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. It is a virtual quarter-final, with the winner all set to become the fourth and final team to qualify for the semi-finals, joining South Africa, England and New Zealand.
India won the toss and captain Suryakumar Yadav opted to bowl first on a batting friendly wicket. West Indies got off to a decent start with the bat, not losing a wicket in the powerplay. But skipper Shai Hope played a poor innings of 32 runs from 33 balls.
However Rovman Powell and Jason Holder’s blitz at the end helped the visitors post a competitive target of 195/4 at the end of their 20 overs. Ace bowler Jasprit Bumrah picked two wickets, but Varun Chakravarthy continued to be expensive.
IND vs WI: What is India’s highest run chase in T20 World Cup history?

India‘s highest ever run chase off 173 came against South Africa back in 2014 at Mirpur. It was a Virat Kohli masterclass then, who stunned a high-quality Proteas bowling unit, ending unbeaten on 72 and finishing off the innings with a boundary off Dale Steyn.
However, in the 2026 World Cup match there will be no Virat Kohli to do the job for India. While they have the batting to script history, it would need something special from the middle-order, with Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan already dismissed.
Should India manage to get the runs and qualify for the semi-finals in Wankhede, this would be their highest ever run chase in the tournament’s history.
