India crushed West Indies by five wickets in their last match of the Super 8 round in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 on Sunday (March 1). With this win, the Men-in-Blue secured their place in the semi-finals of the tournament.
Chasing 196 runs, Sanju Samson played a match-winning knock to propel the Men in Blue to victory. After India lost opener Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan cheaply at the start for 10 runs each, Samson kept the winning hopes alive.
With his unbeaten 97 runs off 50 deliveries, he played a pivotal role in the team’s victory. His innings was laced with 12 boundaries and four sixes. He remained unbeaten till the final over and scored a six and a boundary to capture the winning runs for India.

With his unbeaten 97 runs against the West Indies, Samson has broken former Indian captain Virat Kohli‘s record for the highest score by an Indian batter while chasing a target in the T20 World Cup history.
Kohli scored an unbeaten 82 runs twice during a run-chase- against Australia in T20 World Cup 2016 in Mohali and versus Pakistan in the 2022 edition in Melbourne. However, Samson has broken his record with his unbeaten 97 runs against West Indies.
