Shimron Hetmyer scored 27 runs off 12 balls before getting dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah.
India are taking on West Indies in the Super 8 round of the T20 World Cup 2026 on Sunday (March 1) at Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata. Despite winning the toss and opting to field first, India struggled to dominate the West Indies with their bowling.
Openers Shai Hope (32) and Roston Chase (40) gave a stunning start to batting, adding 68 runs for the first wicket. After Hope got out in the ninth over, Shimron Hetmyer came out to bat at No. 3 and maintained the team’s high run-rate with his aggressive batting.
The left-handed batsman made a quickfire start, adding 27 runs off 12 deliveries with one boundary and two sixes, batting at a strike rate of over 225.0. However, he lost his wicket in the 12th over to Jasprit Bumrah.
Hetmyer got an inside edge on Bumrah’s delivery, and it went straight into wicketkeeper Sanju Samson. The umpire gave out straight away.
However, Hetmyer was not satisfied with the decision and requested a review. The decision went upstairs to the third umpire. The replay showed that there was an edge, and Hetmyer was declared out.

Notably, the West Indies batter was quite confident that he didn’t get an edge and was surprised when the third umpire adjudged him out. Even West Indies coach Daren Sammy was shocked by the decision, and cameras caught his expression.
In the replay, a little gap appeared between Shimron’s bat and the ball, but the ultra edge showed a spike. Since there was no solid evidence to rule out an edge, he was declared out.
Following his dismissal, Bumrah and other Indian players jumped in excitement, but Hetmyer and other West Indies players were stunned.
Meanwhile, the West Indies piled up a mammoth total of 195/4 in the first innings. Rovman Powell (34*) and Jason Holder (37*) did a brilliant job in the death overs to propel the scoreboard to a gigantic total. The winner of the IND vs WI match will secure their place in the semi-final.
