5 members from India's 2023 World Cup squad who haven't been included in ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad

India are scheduled to start their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign against Bangladesh on February 20.
The ICC Champions Trophy is making its much-awaited return after eight years. The previous edition was held in 2017 in England, where Pakistan defeated India by 180 runs in the final to claim the title.
The Men in Blue will enter the competition as one of the title contenders. They have shown immense consistency in the 50-over format in recent years and have one of the most balanced squads in the competition.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India‘s 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy on January 18. The team will start their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20, followed by group stage matches against Pakistan on February 23 and New Zealand on March 2.
The Asian giants have retained the core of the squad that reached the finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, however, a few players have unfortunately lost their place in the team.
On that note, let’s take a look at five players from India’s 2023 World Cup squad who haven’t been included in ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad.
Five members from India’s 2023 World Cup squad who haven’t been included in ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad
1. Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav has been out of the Indian ODI setup following his poor performances in the 2023 World Cup. The middle-order batter was included in the playing XI in ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 after Hardik Pandya’s injury, but failed to make an impact throughout the tournament.
He now leads India in the shortest international cricket format.
2. Mohammed Siraj
Mohammed Siraj’s omission from India’s squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 is perhaps the most surprising among all. He was India’s third seamer in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, and took 14 wickets in 11 matches.
During announcement of India’s squad for the Champions Trophy, skipper Rohit Sharma stated that Siraj’s ineffectiveness with the old ball was a key factor in the decision.
3. Shardul Thakur
It has been a tough few months for Shardul Thakur. The Indian all-rounder hasn’t played in national colours since December 2023 and then faced injury setback before going unsold at the IPL 2025 mega auction.
He played three games in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 before losing his place to Mohammed Shami. Thakur will be eager to put up strong performances in the upcoming Ranji Trophy fixtures to earn a spot in India’s test squad for the five-match series against England.
4. Ishan Kishan
Much like Shardul Thakur, Ishan Kishan seems to have lost his place in the plans of India’s selection committee. Kishan was part of the World Cup 2023 squad and played two games, scoring 0 against Australia and 47 against Afghanistan.
His last international appearance was against Australia in a T20I in Guwahati in November 2023. He will be looking to perform well in the upcoming IPL season to earn back his place in the squad.
5. Ravi Ashwin
Unlike other players on the list, Ashwin’s exclusion from the squad is not due to a selection decision, but rather because of the legendary off-spinner’s retirement from international cricket.
Ashwin was part of India’s squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. The 38-year-old played just one match, which was against Australia in Chennai.
Ashwin played a key role in India’s 2013 ICC Champions Trophy win, taking eight wickets in five matches at an average of 22.
