India lost the test series to New Zealand and Australia to be eliminated from ICC WTC 2023-25 final contention.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled a record prize money ahead of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 final. Australia and South Africa will clash in the ICC WTC 2023-25 final from June 11 at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
The ICC WTC 2023-25 prize pool is an incredible USD 5.76 million (Rs 49.27 crore), more than twice as much as the previous two editions, according to the ICC.
South Africa became the first team to secure a spot in the final after winning a series against Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies and drawing a home series against India.
Meanwhile, Australia qualified for the final after defeating India 3-1 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) earlier this year.
Here is how much India will earn from ICC WTC prize money pool for finishing third
India were primed to finish in the top two spots in the ICC WTC 2023-25 points table after they defeated Bangladesh last year at home. They had eight test matches and had to win only four more tests to qualify for the final.
However, India totally capitulated as they lost to New Zealand 0-3, their first home Test series defeat since 2012. India also were whitewashed for the first time since 1983 at home in tests. India still had the chance to qualify had they won at least three tests against Australia in the BGT 2024-25.
However, after winning the first test in Perth by 295 runs, India lost the plot and the series 3-1 to Australia, surrendering the BGT for the first time in a decade. They also were eliminated from the contention for ICC WTC 2023-25 final as a result.
India finished third in the ICC WTC 2023-25 table behind South Africa and Australia. As a result, the Two-time runners-up India will get USD 1.44 million (Rs 12.31 crore), the third-largest prize money.
“The champions will walk away with USD 3.6 million, a significant jump from the USD 1.6 million awarded in both 2021 and 2023, while the runners-up will earn USD 2.16 million, up from USD 800,000,” an ICC statement revealed.
“We have witnessed a very interesting third cycle of the ICC World Test Championship, where the finalists were decided only towards the end of the competition.
The championship has showcased remarkable performances from players of different teams, culminating in a final between these two exceptional squads – a true celebration of cricket. I am sure spectators at Lord’s, along with fans tuning in from all over the world, will be treated to some top-class cricket in this revered format when Australia and South Africa take the field less than a month from now,” Jay Shah said as per ICC.
