Shreyas Iyer’s numbers make him a strong candidate for India’s white-ball captaincy role.

India’s white-ball leadership structure has largely revolved around established names in recent years, with continuity and role clarity guiding selection decisions. However, performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) have once again brought alternative leadership options into focus, particularly in long-term planning.

One name that continues to gain traction in this discussion is Shreyas Iyer. His leadership credentials are backed by tangible success. He captained Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third IPL title in 2024, adding to an already strong skill set that included leading the Delhi Capitals (DC) to their first-ever final in 2020.

In IPL 2025, he took Punjab Kings to their first-ever final after 2014 and now in 2026, he has further reinforced his value by combining leadership with consistent batting performances for PBKS.

Is Shreyas Iyer deserving candidate for India’s white-ball captaincy?

Iyer still has a strong case, especially given his performance in the IPL. He has scored 3934 runs at an average of over 35, and a strike rate of 135.38 with 30 half-centuries. In T20s, the 31-year-old batter has scored 6781 runs at a strike rate of 137.74.

Since 2020 in T20 cricket, Iyer has scored 464 runs against leg-spin at a strike rate of 131.44, indicating his ability to handle a traditionally challenging matchup. Against pace, he has been even more effective, scoring 2193 runs at a strike rate of 144.94 and an average of 35.95, showcasing his control and scoring ability against faster bowlers.

These numbers highlight a key aspect of Iyer’s game, which is adaptability. His ability to manage both spin and pace throughout an innings is crucial for a middle-order batter, especially in high-pressure white-ball scenarios.

Although, Iyer is the vice-captain in ODIs, he does not fit into India‘s increasingly younger and more aggressive T20 strategies. Leadership positions in teams are ideally filled by regular selections, which may have further affected how team management perceives the use of Iyer in these situations.

The current structure features Shubman Gill in ODIs and Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is, with the former being groomed as a long-term option. This limits options for alternative captaincy roles.

However, leading a team to an IPL title in 2024, and making PBKS a force to reckon with, shows that he possesses a high degree of tactical awareness and strong man-management ability. At 31 years old, Iyer appears to have the characteristics of a long-term leadership option.

The question of whether India have made a poor decision based on their strategy will depend on India’s strategic objectives; however, from all indications to date, Iyer has developed his case solely based on success and results, rather than public perception.

Has Shreyas Iyer captained an IPL-winning team?

Yes, Shreyas Iyer captained Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title in 2024.

Why is Shreyas Iyer not currently in India’s white-ball captaincy plans?

India currently rely on Shubman Gill (ODIs) and Suryakumar Yadav (T20Is) as captains, with team management prioritising continuity and role clarity.
