A look at India's performance in T20 World Cup semi-finals

India will play England in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2026 on March 5 in Mumbai.

The Indian Cricket Team has made it into the semi-finals of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 tournament. This happened after they defeated West Indies in a must-win game on March 1 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

India will meet England for the third consecutive time in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup tournament. Harry Brook-led England had qualified for the semis, going unbeaten in the Super 8s stage, defeating Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and New Zealand.

This is the sixth time India have qualified for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup, equaling the record of Pakistan (2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2021, 2022) and England (2010, 2016, 2021, 2022, 2024, 2026).

And today, we will take a trip down memory lane, checking out how India fared when they played in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cups.

Revisiting India’s performance in the T20 World Cup semifinals:

T20 World Cup 2007: India crush Australia

India and Australia both met in the semi-final of the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 after winning two out of three matches in the Super 8s. The match was played at Kingsmead, Durban, where India batted first after winning the toss.

India made 188/5 in 20 overs as Yuvraj Singh smacked 70 in 30 balls, while Robin Uthappa (34) and MS Dhoni (36) played supporting roles. In response, Matthew Hayden led the charge with 62 in 47 balls, but S Sreesanth, Joginder Singh, and Irfan Pathan kept Australia in check. Australia finally managed 173/7 in 20 overs, and India won the semi-final by 15 runs.

T20 World Cup 2014: India emerge victorious over South Africa

India and South Africa clashed in the 2nd semifinal of the 2014 T20 World Cup in Mirpur, Dhaka. Faf du Plessis won the toss and chose to bat first. Thanks to 58 by Du Plessis, 45 by JP Duminy, and 23* by David Miller, South Africa posted 172/4 in 20 overs. R Ashwin took 3/22 for India.

In response, Virat Kohli led the chase with 72* in 44 balls, while Rohit Sharma (24) and Ajinkya Rahane (32) had given a good start. Suresh Raina slammed a 10-ball 21 to bolster the chase as India won by 6 wickets in 19.1 overs.

T20 World Cup 2016: India suffer defeat to the West Indies

India and the West Indies met in a much-hyped semi-final in Mumbai in the 2016 T20 World Cup. West Indies came into this game in top form, while India didn’t have a smooth route to the knockouts. Daren Sammy won the toss and chose to chase. India’s Virat Kohli carried the Indian team to 192/2, scoring 89* in 47 balls. Ajinkya Rahane made 40 in 35 balls, while Rohit Sharma made 43 in 31 balls.

West Indies lost two wickets early, but Johnson Charles made 52, while Lendl Simmons led their chase with a sublime 82* in 51 balls, while Andre Russell muscled his way to 43* in 20 balls as West Indies won the game by 7 wickets in the last over.

India and England played the 2nd semi-final of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Adelaide. India were asked to bat first and struggled to put runs on the board. Virat Kohli made 50 in 40 balls, while Hardik Pandya made 63 in 33 balls, to push India to 168/6 in 20 overs. It gave India an outside chance to make it into the final.

However, England openers Alex Hales and Jos Buttler ended that chance in the powerplay itself. Buttler made 80* in 49 balls, while Hales made 86* in 47 balls and combined that with hitting 10 sixes. England won the game by 10 wickets in 16 overs as India were completely decimated.

India got a chance at redemption when they faced England in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024 in Guyana. England asked India to bat first and succeeded in dismissing Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant early. But Rohit Sharma made 57 and Suryakumar Yadav made 47 runs to stabilize the innings. Hardik Pandya’s 23 and Ravindra Jadeja’s 17* powered India to 171/7 in 20 overs.

Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, with three wickets each, and Jasprit Bumrah, with two wickets, didn’t give England even a sniff at victory. Harry Brook made 25, while Jos Buttler made 23 as England folded for 103 runs inside 17 overs and lost the game by 68 runs. India had avenged their 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final loss in a scintillating fashion.
