India played their first day-night test match in 2019.

Amid the dip in the viewership in test cricket, the concept of day-night test matches was thought of in the 2000s and introduced in the mid-2010s.

While ODIs and T20s continued to remain popular among the masses, test cricket had suffered as the stands would look vastly empty in most countries and the television audience, too, wouldn’t tune in to much of the day-time scheduling.

As the ICC and other stakeholders of test cricket looked for a solution to this, the idea of day-night test cricket was conceived. The evening session in day-night tests now hold the prime time slot on television.

One major change from regular day test cricket to day-night tests is the change in the color of the ball, from red to pink. There had been previous experiments with yellow and orange balls as well but the pink ball was considered to be the best for day-night games as it was easier to spot under lights compared to other colors that were tried. Obviously, with the players wearing white jersey in test matches, the white ball wasn’t considered for day-night tests.

When was the first day-night test match played?

The first-ever day-night, pink-ball test match was played in 2015 between Australia and New Zealand in Adelaide, which Australia won.

Other boards embraced the pink-ball test, too, and now it’s becoming a regular fixture in their calenders.

When did India play their first day-night test match?

India played their first day-night test in 2019 against Bangladesh in Kolkata and won it comfortably.

What is India’s record in day-night tests?

India have so far played four day-night test matches, out of which they won three and lost one. All their three wins have come at home against Bangladesh, England and Sri Lanka, while their one loss was against Australia in Adelaide in 2020, in which they were bowled out for 36 runs.
