India picked 13 wickets, while South Africa took 10 wickets on Day 1 of the second test in Cape Town.

India and South Africa share a rare test record with brilliant bowling display in all three sessions of the first day’s play in the second test at Newlands, Cape Town. 23 wickets fell on day one at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. Mohammed Siraj started the day with a brilliant opening spell of six wickets and then Lungi Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada forced India into one of the most bizarre batting collapses.

Three more wickets on the first day would have created a new world record, but still, these two sides have managed to end up second in the record books. India dismissed South Africa for just 55 runs and then South Africa fought back to dismiss India for 153. South Africa ended the first at 62 for 3 trailing by 36 runs.

23 wickets in a day

Australia and England hold the record for taking most wickets on day one of a test match. Australia and England bowlers took a total of 25 wickets in a test match played at the MCG in 1902. India and South Africa combined took 23 wickets on first day of the second test played at Newlands, Cape Town in 2024. India’s clash against South Africa now stands among the old classic test matches played in previous centuries.

Most wickets on Day 1 of a Test match:

25 – AUS vs ENG, Melbourne, 1902

23 – SA vs IND, Cape Town, 2024

22 – ENG vs AUS, The Oval, 1890

22 – AUS vs WI, Adelaide, 1951

21 – SA vs ENG, Gqeberha, 1896

South African skipper Dean Elgar won the toss and elected to bat first against India. The conditions were favourable for the batters when the toss happened as Elgar was keen on utilising the dry nature of the surface along with hot and warm weather in Cape Town. Mohammed Siraj got the benefit of late swing and produced a magical spell in the opening hour.

Mohammed Siraj went to bowl 9 overs in his opening spell and took six wickets conceding only 15 runs. Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets, while Mukesh Kumar finished the South African tail early. India had a decent start and they were placed comfortably at 153 for 4, but KL Rahul’s wicket opened the floodgate and India lost all remaining 6 wickets without adding a single run in the span of just 11 deliveries. South Africa lost three wickets in their second innings.
