India lost the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 final to Pakistan.

The ICC Champions Trophy (CT) 2017 was one of the most exciting ICC competitions played over the past dozen years. That is because it featured two India vs Pakistan matches, including the final.

India coasted breezily to the final, defeating Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka in the group round, and Bangladesh in the semi-final.

However, they were unstuck in the final against the arch-rivals, losing by 180 runs. Fakhar Zaman bagged Man of the Match award in the final for his splendid century.

A lot of changed in the Indian ODI side since the ICC Champions Trophy 2017.

India squad for ICC Champions Trophy 2017: What are they up to now?

Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma was the second-highest run-scorer of the tournament with 304 runs. He was the vice-captain then and now is the ODI skipper.

Rohit got full-time ODI captaincy in late 2021. He led India to the runners-up position in the ICC World Cup 2023 and to the title in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. He is still an active international cricketer and most likely will lead India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Rohit retired from T20Is in June 2024 and currently is the skipper in the other two formats.

Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan was the leading run-scorer in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 with 338 runs in five knocks. Dhawan last played for India in December 2022 and was replaced by Shubman Gill at the top.

Dhawan retired from international cricket, domestic cricket, and the IPL in August 2024. He recently played in the Nepal Premier League and will eye more opportunities outside India.

Virat Kohli (C)

Virat Kohli was at the peak of his powers during that period and was the untouchable skipper then. In the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, Kohli scored 258 runs at an average of 129.

He was replaced as the ODI skipper by the BCCI with Rohit in December 2021. He continued to dominate ODI cricket with the bat, and had a record-breaking World Cup 2023, where he amassed 765 runs.

Kohli retired from T20Is in June 2024 and remains a key cog in the other two formats.

Yuvraj Singh

Yuvraj Singh held the No. 4 position in the ODI team for a long time. However, only 105 runs in the 2017 Champions Trophy saw his ouster from the side soon after.

Yuvraj retired from international cricket in June 2019. Since retirement, Yuvraj has been participating in the various Legends Leagues competitions.

MS Dhoni (wk)

The former skipper MS Dhoni got to bat only twice in the Champions Trophy 2017 and he scored 67 runs. Dhoni remained a key cog of the ODI setup until the 2019 World Cup.

He announced his international retirement in August 2020, but he is a regular in the Indian Premier League.

Kedar Jadhav

Like Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav was an important figure in the lower-middle-order of the Indian ODI side between 2016 and the 2019 World Cup. However, his low returns and outdated approach meant he was pushed out of the side in 2020.

Jadhav retired from all forms of cricket in June 2024 and has been actively involved in commentary since then.

Hardik Pandya

Pandya, who kept India’s hopes alive in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, was a youngster then and just a couple of years into his India career.

Now he is a senior player and also donned the leadership roles in the white-ball teams.

He is a crucial cog in India’s ODI and T20I teams and is the skipper of Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja has remained in the same role throughout his ODI career: a bankable spinner and a lower-order handy batsman. It’s the same role he played in the 2013 Champions Trophy, in the 2017 edition, and is expected to be retained for the 2025 edition.

Jadeja is retired from T20Is and is a key member in ODI and test teams right now.

Ravichandran Ashwin

After managing just one wicket in the 2017 Champions Trophy, Ashwin was dropped from the ODI and T20I sides.

He managed brief comebacks to both white-ball teams for the ICC events in 2021, 2022, and 2023, and was dropped immediately after.

Ashwin retired from international cricket in December 2024. He will be next seen playing in the IPL 2025.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s seven wickets at an economy of 4.63 were vital in India’s run to the final in the Champions Trophy 2017. He remained a first-choice pacer in the white-ball teams until 2022.

After then, his form and fitness hindered his career and was dropped from the side for Mohammed Siraj. His last match for India was in November 2022.

He plays regularly in the IPL.

Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah had a forgettable Champions Trophy 2017 where he picked up four wickets at an average of 52. Most crucially, his no-ball wicket of Fakhar Zaman is infamous.

But, Bumrah shrugged off that tournament and went on to become the premier pacer for India across formats and conditions. He had a sensational World Cup 2023.

If fit, he will be leading India’s bowling attack in the 2025 edition of the Champions Trophy, hoping to bury the ghosts of 2017.

Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane warmed the bench throughout the tournament as India’s first-choice batsmen didn’t suffer any injury.

Rahane’s last ODI match was in 2018 and his last test match was in 2023. Rahane continues to ply his trade in domestic cricket and IPL.

Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik was a late addition to the squad as a replacement of the injured Manish Pandey. Like Rahane, Karthik also carried drinks in the entire tournament without any game time.

Karthik, however, featured in the 2019 World Cup in the role of a finisher, but couldn’t do much. He was dropped from the ODI side then. His last T20I was in 2022.

Karthik retired from international, domestic and IPL cricket after IPL 2024. He has now started doing commentary and will foray into the world of overseas T20 leagues.

Umesh Yadav

Umesh played a couple of games in the Champions Trophy 2017 and snared three wickets. Umesh’s last ODI was in 2018 and his last test match in 2023.

He was dropped from the Indian team across formats as he remained inconsistent and was expensive often.

Outed from the national side, Umesh remains a regular feature in domestic cricket and IPL.

Mohammed Shami

Mohammed Shami was on the bench for the entire Champions Trophy 2017. He saw a rise in his stature during the World Cup 2019 with impressive performances and then took the World Cup 2023 by storm by taking 24 wickets in only seven matches.

He is still an active international cricketer and is currently recovering from an ankle injury and a swollen knee, but is expected to feature in the Champions Trophy 2025.
