India to submit initial squad for Cricket World Cup 2023 by September 5 - Reports
The final date to submit finalized squad is September 27.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection panel headed by Ajit Agarkar is reportedly set to name the provisional Indian squad for the Cricket World Cup 2023 by September 5. Up until now, only Australia have named its provisional World Cup squad.
The World Cup 2023 is set to begin on October 5, with New Zealand taking on defending champions England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. On the other hand, India will open their World Cup campaign on October 8 against five-time World Champions Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
As per PTI reports, the BCCI selection panel will pick 16–18 players for both, Asia Cup and the Australia home series before zeroing in on the final squad.
The think tank will no longer be experimenting after the three-match series against West Indies, and if sources are to be believed, they have settled on the core 18–19 players for the upcoming ICC World Cup, of whom 15 will be selected for the actual competition.
As per ICC rules, every team has to submit its initial squad of 15 by September 5, but the final submission can be done by September 27. Countries are allowed to make as many changes as possible between the initial and final submissions. Interestingly, the Australia series ends on September 27, the day of the final submission.
It is expected that India’s Asia Cup squad will be selected by the end of this week or by the middle of next week (latest by August 16–17).
KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer to get full chance of recovery before Cricket World Cup
The availability of injured batters KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer would certainly make India one of the serious title contenders, and hence the report stated that both the cricketers who are recovering from their respective injuries and subsequent surgeries will get the full chance of recovery.
More focus is on KL Rahul, as he is considered to be a key batter in the middle order and a first-choice wicket-keeper in ODIs.
“The selectors and the team management want to give both Rahul and Shreyas full chance of recovery. Rahul is certainly way ahead in terms of recovery and getting closer to full-match fitness. But he needs to do match simulation where he is able to keep wickets for 50 overs,” a BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
“The Instagram videos show that he is doing well but 50 overs of keeping and at least 30 overs of batting in the heat will prove how his operated thigh is holding up in humid conditions. If he is able to do well over the next nine possible games (six if India play the Asia Cup final plus three against Australia), it will be the best news for the Indian team,” he added.
KL Rahul one of the senior members of the Indian team, will need to simulate a 50-over match before the continental tournament because the Indian team management is keen to have him totally fit for the upcoming Asia Cup in Sri Lanka.
