India women’s cricket team will begin their Asian Games 2023 campaign on Thursday, 21st September.
The women’s cricket competition has already kicked off at the largest sporting event in Asia. This marks the third time in history that cricket has been included in the Asian Games. On the previous two occasions, India couldn’t participate due to prior commitments. However, in the current Asian Games, they have decided to compete for glory and be part of this significant Asian sports event. While the BCCI chose to send a less experienced men’s team due to scheduling conflicts with the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, the women’s team will feature their star players, ready to take on the top teams in the Asian Games.
India are considered the strong favorite to clinch the Gold medal at the Asian Games, as cricket makes its return to the competition after 9 years. Pakistan claimed the title in 2010 and 2014, while India are making their debut in the Asian Games. It’s worth mentioning that India are the reigning champion of the Women’s Asia Cup, which took place in 2022. Additionally, they secured the Silver medal in last year’s Commonwealth Games after a close defeat to Australia in the final match.
Harmanpreet Kaur captains Team India, but her participation depends on India reaching the finals or, in case of a semi-final loss, she can play in the bronze medal match. She received a two-match ban for her outburst at the umpires and Bangladesh captain, resulting in an ICC penalty. During her suspension, designated vice-captain of the team, Smriti Mandhana will be the captain.
