Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar, who made his debut in 1989, completed 2000 test runs in 1994 during a game against New Zealand at Hamilton. In what was his 44th innings in the longest format of the game, he registered scores of 43 and 11* across two innings.
6. Sunil Gavaskar – 44 innings
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, who played his first test in 1971, took six years to achieve the milestone of 2000 test runs He went past the 2000-run mark in test cricket in his 44th innings, which was against the West Indies at the Port of Spain.
5. Gautam Gambhir – 43 innings
Current Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir is the fifth fastest Indian batter to 2000 runs in test cricket. After making his debut in 2006, the opening batter took 43 innings to achieve the feat. In a game against New Zealand at Napier in 2009, Gambhir scored 16 and 136 runs in two innings, in which he completed 2000 test runs.
4. Vijay Hazare – 43 innings
Vijay Hazare sits fourth on the list as he scored his 2000th run in a test against the West Indies at Port of Spain in 1953. In what was his 43rd innings, he didn’t have a great outing in the match as he scored just 29 runs across two innings, including a duck.
3. Yashasvi Jaiswal – 40 innings

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made his test cricket debut for India in 2023, took less than two years to complete 2000 runs. On July 12, 2023, he made his test debut against the West Indies and started his test career with a daddy hundred. Later, on July 4, 2025, he reached the 2000-run mark in test cricket in his 40th test innings.
In terms of matches taken and time taken, Jaiswal is the fastest Indian to achieve the feat as he completed the milestone withing two years of his test debut and took only 21 matches to do so.
2. Virender Sehwag – 40 innings
Virender Sehwag, who was rated as one of the fiercest openers in test cricket, completed 2000 test runs in 40 innings. Sehwag made his debut in 2001 and didn’t take long to go past 2000 runs as he achieved the feat in 2004 while playing against Australia in Chennai.

‘The Wall,’ Rahul Dravid also completed 2000 runs in test cricket in just 40 innings. The former Indian skipper achieved many incredible things for the side in the longest format of the game, scoring truckloads of runs both at home as well as overseas. He surpasses the 2000-run mark in his 40th innings. He achieved the feat in Hamilton against New Zealand in 1999. He returned with scores of 190 and 103* in the game.
