Amassing 9,000 runs in test cricket is a huge feat for any batter. Achieving this monumental milestone is a reflection of the batter’s skills and consistency and adds to his legacy in the longest format.
The ability to score such a huge amount of runs against some legendary bowling attacks and in varied conditions is a trait of exceptional batsmanship.
Only four Indian batsmen have attained this iconic feat in test cricket. In this article, we will see which Indian batsmen have reached this landmark and in how many innings.

4. Virat Kohli – 197 innings:
Modern-day legend Virat Kohli became the fourth Indian batter to score 9000 or more runs in test cricket. Kohli joined the iconic list of Indian batters, including Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar.
The 35-year-old achieved this glorious milestone in his 197th innings in test cricket, during the opening test match against New Zealand at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in October 2024.
So far, the legendary cricketer has played 116 tests and amassed 9000 runs at an admirable average of 48.91. Kohli has smashed 29 centuries and 31-half centuries in test cricket till now.
3. Sunil Gavaskar – 192 innings:
Legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar was the first Indian cricketer to reach 9000 runs in test cricket. Gavaskar is the third-fastest Indian batter to reach this figure.
The former opener reached this iconic milestone during the test match against Australia in Adelaide in December 1985. Gavaskar took 110 matches and 192 innings to get to 9000 runs in test cricket.
The Mumbai-born cricketer was also the first batter in test cricket to reach the epic milestone of 10,000 runs.
2. Sachin Tendulkar – 179 innings
Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar is hailed as the most complete batsman of all time by most. During his unforgettable career, Tendulkar shattered and created innumerable batting records in ODIs and tests. He is the highest-run getter in tests with 15921 runs.
In terms of innings, Tendulkar is the second-fastest Indian to the 9000-run landmark in the longest format. The right-hander took 111 matches and 179 innings to touch 9000 runs. He achieved this milestone during the test match against Australia in Sydney in January 2004.
1. Rahul Dravid – 176 innings
A classical test match batter, Rahul Dravid is one of the greatest ever to play the game. Fondly known as ‘The Wall,’ the legendary Indian cricketer was a regular member of the test team for more than a decade and a half.
Dravid amassed more than 10,000 runs in both formats. During his glorious international career, Dravid bagged many milestones, including becoming the fastest Indian batter to reach the 9000-run landmark in tests.
Dravid achieved this feat during a match against the West Indies in Kingston in 2006. Dravid took 104 matches and 176 innings (three fewer than Tendulkar) to reach the milestone of 9000 test runs. Overall, he is the third-fastest after Kumar Sangakkara (172 innings) and Steve Smith (174 innings).
