Only four Indian batsmen have scored a century at the Gabba in test cricket.
The Brisbane Cricket Ground in Brisbane, famously known as “The Gabba,” has been a fortress for Australia in test cricket for long. Known for its extra pace and bounce, the Brisbane track complements the tall Australian bowlers.
Australia enjoyed an unbeaten test run at the Gabba between 1988 to 2021 before losing famously to India in 2021. While India’s performance in 2021 was historic, their overall record in Brisbane has not been convincing.
Indian batters, in particular, have found it challenging to adapt to the bouncy wicket of the Gabba. Only a select few have managed to rise above these difficulties and post big runs at the iconic venue. 5. Shubman Gill – 91 runs, 2021
The 2021 Brisbane test is widely remembered for Rishabh Pant’s match-winning unbeaten 89 runs in the second innings. However, what is often forgotten is Shubman Gill‘s top order contribution of 91 runs.
Chasing the target of 328 runs in the fourth innings, Gill laid the foundation for India with his gritty knock.
Gill’s innings was full of free flowing stroke making consisting of eight fours and two sixes. He added 114 runs for the second wicket with Cheteshwar Pujara forming the base for Rishabh Pant to come and attack the Aussies later.
4. Motganhalli Jaisimha – 101 runs, 1968
Classical Indian middle-order batter Motganhalli Jaisimha smashed an impressive ton in the second innings of 1968 Brisbane test. Chasing a massive target of 395 runs, Motganhalli’s 101-run knock pushed India to 355 runs in the run chase.
Jaisimha’s innings included nine boundaries. He added 119 runs with Chandu Borde for the sixth wicket to bring back India back into the contest, which they unfortunately lost at the end by 39 runs.
3. Sunil Gavaskar – 113 runs, 1977
In India’s tour of Australia in 1977, Sunil Gavaskar smashed a sensational century at the Gabba, Brisbane. In the first test of the tour, Gavaskar smashed 113.
Chasing a big target of 340 runs, Gavaskar’s gritty century pushed India to 324 runs. However, the visitors lost the nail-biting contest by just 16 runs.
Sunil’s knock came off just 264 balls and included 12 boundaries. He was India’s highest run-scorer in the game with his total score of 116.
2. Murali Vijay – 144 runs, 2014
Murali Vijay starred for India in the second test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2014-15 with 144 runs in the first innings. Batting on day 1, Vijay’s innings helped India post a big total of 408 runs in the first innings.
His knock of 144 runs off 213 balls included 22 boundaries. Despite Murali’s historic knock, India lost the game at the end by four wickets. India conceded 505 runs in the first innings and then managed to put only 224 on the board in the second innings, setting a target of 128 runs for the Aussies, which they chased with loss of six wickets.
1. Saurav Ganguly – 144 runs, 2003
Former Indian captain Saurav Ganguly holds the record for the joint-highest test score by an Indian batsman at the Gabba with his 144-run knock against Australia in 2003.
Ganguly’s ton came in the first test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2003. Replying to Australia’s first-innings total of 323 runs, Ganguly’s century propelled India to 409 runs.
His impactful knock, which came in 196 balls, consisted of 18 boundaries. The game ultimately, ended in a draw.
