Top 5 highest test scores by Indian batsmen against England in England

Three Indian batsmen have hit double centuries in tests against England in England.
The Indian Cricket Team and the England Cricket Team are among the oldest test-playing nations in international cricket. Their test rivalry dates back to the year 1932, when India toured England for the first time in a one-off test match at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
Since then, both the teams have faced each other in 136 tests, out of which, England won 51 matches whereas India registered victories in 35 games. 50 matches ended in a draw.
However, India’s winning record drastically drops when considering away test matches against England. India have faced England in 67 matches on the latter’s home, winning just nine games and losing 36 encounters. 22 clashes ended in a draw.
Over the years, Indian batsmen have faced huge challenges on England grounds where pitches offer seam-friendly and swinging conditions. However, a few Indian batsmen overcame these challenges in the past and came out with impeccable knocks on English soil.
If we look at Indian batsmen with the highest test scores against England in England, seven players have scored 150-plus knocks. Moreover, two Indian batsmen have also hammered double centuries in England. On that note, let’s look at the top five highest scores by Indian batsmen against England in England.

5. Ravi Shastri – 187
Former India all-rounder Ravi Shastri scored 187 runs in a test match against England in August 1990. During the third and last test of the series at The Oval in London, Shastri scored 187 runs off 436 deliveries in the first innings as an opener.
The former India coach slammed 23 boundaries during his knock. He powered India to a mammoth 606/9d on the scoreboard, however, the match eventually ended in a draw.
4. Sachin Tendulkar – 193
Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar grabbed a lot of limelight against England during the 2002 tour, when he scored 193 runs during the third test at Headingley, Leeds. Tendulkar slammed 19 fours and three sixes off 330 deliveries during his innings.
The right-handed batsman missed his double century by a few runs; however, he helped India to post a gigantic total of 628/8d in the first innings. Later, India also won the encounter by an innings and 46 runs by bowling out England for 273 and 309 in both innings after enforcing follow-on.
3. Rahul Dravid – 217
Former India batter Rahul Dravid captures the third spot on this list with his double ton against England in September 2002. During the fourth test of India’s tour of England 2002 at The Oval, the right-handed batsman scored 217 runs off 468 balls in the first innings with the help of 28 boundaries.
The high-scoring clash ended in a draw and Dravid won Player of the Match award for his outstanding batting show.
2. Sunil Gavaskar – 221
Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar held the record with his 221-run knock against England in August 1979 before Shubman Gill broke it in 2025. During fourth test of the series between England India at The Oval, Gavaskar slammed his double ton with 21 boundaries. The Indian opener played a magnificent knock in the final innings when India looked to chase down a gigantic 438-run target.
Although India could not win the encounter, they managed to draw it by reaching 429/8 at the end of fifth day. Gavaskar became the first Indian batsman to slam a double ton against England in England and also clinched Player of the Match award in the clash.
1. Shubman Gill – 269

In India’s tour of England in 2025, Shubman Gill broke Sunil Gavaskar’s record for highest individual score by an Indian batter against England in England in test cricket. During the second test of the five-match test series, Indian captain Shubman Gill smashed a sensational double hundred at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
Gill scored 269 off 387 deliveries in the game with help of 30 fours and three sixes. His innings helped India post a massive total of 587 in the first innings.
