Nine instances of Indian batters hitting twin centuries in test cricket

Sunil Gavaskar has struck twin centuries on three occasions, the most by an Indian in test cricket.

Players like Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli’s have unmatched stardom. All these three names have so many batting records under their belt in test cricket.
Apart from these three there are a few others who have dazzled the international stage with their blistering performances. Scoring a century is one of the toughest tasks in cricket and twin tons in a test match is one of the rare achievements. Let’s have a look at the nine Instances of Indian batters hitting twin centuries in test cricket.
1 . Vijay Hazare vs Australia at Adelaide Oval 1948
Former Indian opening batter Vijay Hazare was the first Indian batter to score twin centuries in test cricket. Hazare scored twin centuries in 1948 against Australia at Adelaide Oval in Adelaide.
Vijay Hazare scored 116 runs in the first innings of the test match and then went on to contribute 145 in the second innings. Despite Hazare’s twin centuries, India lost the game by an innings and 16 runs.
2. Sunil Gavaskar vs West Indies at Port of Spain 1971

Legendary Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar announced himself to the world with a splendid show in the Caribbean.
Gavaskar made his debut in 1971 and right after playing three test matches, he slammed twin centuries in a test match against the fearsome West Indian pace attack. Sunil Gavaskar scored 124 in the first innings and smashed a double ton (220) in the second innings.
3. Sunil Gavaskar vs Pakistan at NCS (Karachi) 1978
Sunil Gavaskar is one of a few batters who scored twin centuries in a test match on three occasions in his career.
The legendary Indian opener’s second twin centuries in a test match came against arch-rivals Pakistan in Karachi. Fondly known as the “Little Master,” Gavaskar scored 111 runs in the first innings and 137 in the second.
4. Sunil Gavaskar vs West Indies at Eden Gardens 1978
Sunil Gavaskar’s third twin centuries came against his most favourite opponents West Indies at Eden Garden in Kolkata in 1978.
Gavaskar added 344 runs for the second wicket in the second innings along with Dilip Sardesai in this game. The Mumbai ace scored 107 runs in the first innings and then went on to score 182* in the second innings.
5. Rahul Dravid vs New Zealand at Seddon Park 1999
One of India’s finest test batters Rahul Dravid is also on this list. Dravid is also among the few batters with more than one twin centuries in his test career.
Rahul Dravid scored his first twin tons against New Zealand at Seddon Park in Hamilton. Dravid scored 190 runs in the first innings of the test match and scored 103* in the second innings of the game.
6. Rahul Dravid vs Pakistan at Eden Gardens 2005

Rahul Dravid’s second twin tons came against Pakistan at Eden Gardens in the iconic 2005 series. This was one rare occasion in test cricket when a team scored exactly the same scores in the first and second innings (407).
Dravid scored 110 runs in the first innings and contributed 135 runs in the second innings of this test match. India won the game by 195 runs.
7. Virat Kohli vs Australia at Adelaide Oval 2014

Star Indian batter Virat Kohli made his entry into this list in 2014. This was one of the finest test series for Kohli with the bat.
The Delhi lad scored his twin tons against Australia. He scored 115 runs in the first innings and then went on to score 141 runs in the second innings during a mammoth run chase. India lost the test match by 48 runs.
8. Ajinkya Rahane vs South Africa at Feroz Shah Kotla 2015

The Feroz Shah Kotla test match against South Africa in 2015 is remembered for a few reasons. Ajinkya Rahane scored twin centuries in this test match.
He scored 127 runs in the first innings and then contributed 100* in the second innings. South Africa batted for 143 overs in the fourth inning and scored only 143 while chasing 481 runs.
9. Rohit Sharma vs South Africa at ACA-VDCA Stadium 2019

Rohit Sharma scored twin centuries against South Africa at ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam in 2019.
Sharma scored 176 runs in the first innings and 127 runs in the second innings of this test. Rohit smacked 13 sixes in his innings against South Africa.
