5. Dilip Vengsarkar – 875 runs (1987)
One of India’s best batters during the late 1970s and 1980s, Dilip Vengsarkar scored 875 runs at home at an impressive average of 87.5 in 1987. Dilip’s personal best year at home in test cricket saw him score four centuries and three half-centuries.
Vengsarkar started his test career in 1976 against New Zealand at Auckland. His test career, spanning over 16 years, saw him score 6868 runs at an average of 42.13. Vengasarkar also holds one of the most iconic nicknames in cricketing history – “Lord of the Lord’s” for his three centuries at the storied English venue.
4. Virat Kohli – 898 runs (2017)
Virat Kohli was in dreamland during the 2016-2017 home season. In 2017, he scored 898 runs in tests in India at an average of 81.63.
Kohli’s dominance saw him register four centuries and one half-century in the 2017 home tests. One of Kohli’s most iconic test innings at home also came this year when he smoked the Sri Lankan bowling attack in Nagpur with a blistering knock of 213 runs.
Making his debut in 2011, Kohli has become one of India’s all-time greatest batsmen. In his illustrious test career, Kohli has amassed over 9000 runs at an average of over 48.
3. Virat Kohli – 964 runs (2016)
2016 remains the best year for Virat Kohli in-home tests. Kohli marked the year by scoring 964 runs at an average of 80.33, with the help of three centuries and two half-centuries.
Against England in a five-match test series that year, Kohli piled up 655 runs at an average of 109, with a best of 235.
At the age of 35, Kohli is still one of India’s most important batsmen in the test setup.
2. Gundappa Viswanath – 1047 runs (1979)
In 1979, Gundappa Viswanath scored 1,047 runs in test cricket at home at an average of 63.43. His impressive year was marked by four centuries and three half-centuries in home tests. Known for his wristy elegance and sweet timing, Viswanath was the best Indian batsman during the home season of 1979.
Debuting in 1969, Viswanath played 91 test matches, scoring 6,080 runs. He is regarded as one of India’s best batsmen of the 1970s and 80s along with Sunil Gavaskar and Dilip Vengsarkar.
1. Yashasvi Jaiswal – 1056 runs (2024)
Regarded as one of the most exciting young talents around the globe right now, Yashasvi Jaiswal has had a breakthrough year in 2024 in test cricket. Jaiswal scored 1056 runs in 17 test innings at home at an average of 66 with two double hundreds and seven fifties.
The most remarkable performance of Jaiswal this year came against England at the beginning of the year, when he amassed 712 runs at a blistering strike rate of 80. Jaiswal has become an integral part of the Indian test setup.
