India have been blessed with some of the most iconic batters in the game of cricket. That is one big reason that you will find Indian batters at the top of any test record most of the times.

Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for most centuries and runs, while Virender Sehwag is among the few to have hit two triple centuries. Some of the Indian batters have also showed individual brilliance in some test matches. Two Indian batters have so far hit triple centuries in the longest format of the game and one among them, Virender Sehwag, hit two of them.

Other than that, some other batters have also amassed over 300 runs in a test match for India. On that note, let’s take a look at Indian batters with most runs in a test match.

10. Sachin Tendulkar (301) vs Australia, Sydney, 2004

Sachin Tendulkar’s iconic innings of 241 not out in Sydney in 2004 is still fresh in the minds of Indian fans. Because it came after some tough games for him, and he was getting out while playing outside off deliveries. But, during this game, he decided not to play the cover drive and went on to play this magical knock.

Sachin scored 241 and 60 runs in the game and remained unbeaten in the game. He scored a total of 301 in the game, which is the tenth highest by an Indian batter in a test.

9. Rohit Sharma (303) vs South Africa, Vizag, 2019

Rohit Sharma also had a great time as a test opener for India and hit twin tons in a game. He scored twin hundreds in Vishakapatnam against South Africa during the 2019 home series.

Rohit scored 176 and 127 in two innings and helped India win the game by 203 runs. His total of 303 runs in the game is ninth-highest individual match total by an Indian batter in a test match.

8. Karun Nair (303) vs England, Chennai, 2016

Only two Indian batters have scored a triple century in test cricket so far. One of them is Virender Sehwag and the other one is Karun Nair. He scored his first and only test century against England in Chennai in 2016.

Nair went on to slam a triple century and made unbeaten 303 off 381 balls, with 32 fours and four sixes. His 303 runs feature in eighth place on this list.

7. Rahul Dravid (305) vs Australia, Adelaide, 2003

Rahul Dravid delivered some exceptional performances in SENA countries. One of those came in 2003 at the Adelaide Oval. In reply to Australia’s first-innings score of 556, India made 523 runs, and 233 of those came off Rahul Dravid’s bat.

Later, India dismissed Australia for 196 in the second innings and had a target of 230 runs to chase. They made 233/6 and won the game. Dravid scored 72 not out in the second innings to finish the match with 305 runs, which is seventh highest by an Indian batter in a test match.

6. Virender Sehwag (309) vs Pakistan, Multan, 2004

In 2004, Virender Sehwag became the first Indian batter to score a triple century in test cricket. He delivered a sensational performance against Pakistan in Multan, which earned him the nickname of “Multan ka Sultan.” He scored 309 off 375 balls, with 39 fours and six sixes.

India declared at 675/5 and dismissed Pakistan for 407 and 206 in two innings to win the game by an innings and 52 runs. Sehwag’s 309 is the sixth-highest aggregate for India in a test match.

5. Virender Sehwag (319) vs South Africa, Chennai, 2008

Fours years after his first triple century, Virender Sehwag rewrote history as he smashed another triple century in a test match against South Africa in Chennai in 2008.

South Africa scored 540 runs in the first innings and India responded with 627, courtesy of a record-breaking innings by Sehwag. He scored 319 off 304 balls, with 42 fours and five sixes, which is the fifth-highest match total by an Indian batter in tests.

4. Sourav Ganguly (330) vs Pakistan, Bengaluru, 2007

Sourav Ganguly was very near to becoming the second Indian to score a double hundred and a hundred in a test match, but failed after getting dismissed for 91 in the second innings. It was a game against Pakistan at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in 2007.

Ganguly scored his highest test score of 239 in the first innings, and India made 537 runs. Ganguly was very close to a century in the second innings but got out for 91 runs. He scored 330 runs in the game, and it ended in a draw.

3. VVS Laxman (340) vs Australia, Kolkata, 2001

Only three teams have won a test match after being enforced follow-on, and one of them is India. They did it against Australia in 2001 at the Eden Gardens, which saw one of the best batting performances by an Indian batter. In reply to Australia’s 445, India were all out for 171 runs in the first innings, trailing by another 274 runs.

VVS Laxman was the top scorer with 59 runs. But, the second innings saw an inhuman performance as Laxman (281) added 376 runs with Rahul Dravid (180 runs) to take India to 657/7d. Later, India set a target of 384 runs for Australia and bowled them out for 212 runs to win the match by 171 runs. VVS Laxman was named Player of the Match for scoring 340 runs in the game.

2. Sunil Gavaskar (344) vs West Indies, Port of Spain, 1971

Sunil Gavaskar was the first Indian batter to score a double hundred and a hundred in a test match. It came in a drawn match against the West Indies at Port of Spain in 1971. Gavaskar batted for 392 minutes to score 124 runs in he first innings.

In the second innings, he scored a double hundred (220) to score 344 runs in the game, which is the second-highest for an Indian batter in a test match. The match ended in a draw

1. Shubman Gill (430) vs England, Birmingham, 2025

Shubman Gill became only the second Indian and ninth batter overall to score a double hundred and a hundred in a test match. He achieved this milestone against England at Edgbaston in 2025, in his second game as test captain.

Gill scored 269 runs in the first innings of the game, which is the highest test score for an Indian captain, and then scored another century (161) in the second innings to finish the match with 430 runs, which is the most by an Indian batter in a test. Overall, it is the second highest by a batter in a test match just behind Graham Gooch’s 456, which came against India in 1990.
