Five Indian batsmen have scored over 2000 runs against Australia in test cricket.

The rivalry between India and Australia in test cricket has delivered many memorable moments over the years. The first time India and Australia came up against each other in test cricket was back in 1947/48.

Since then, these teams have produced some historic matches time and again. This rivalry has become a lot more competitive since the 1990s and is on par with the Ashes rivalry in the 21st century in terms of on-field action.

The conditions in India and Australia are way different from each other, which has their matches even more interesting to watch.

Some Indian batters have enjoyed quite a bit of success against Australia and scored plenty of runs against them in test cricket both home and away. In this article, we will talk about five Indians with the most runs in test cricket against Australia.

5. Virat Kohli – 2042 runs

Former Indian captain Virat Kohli has an incredible record against Australia across formats. In test cricket, he is the fifth-leading scorer for India against Australia.

In 25 tests against the Aussies, Kohli has scored 2042 runs at an average of 47.48 and a best of 186. He has hit eight test centuries (second-most by an Indian vs Australia) and five half-centuries. In 2018/19, he became the first captain to lead India to a series win in Australia.

4. Cheteshwar Pujara – 2074 runs

Cheteshwar Pujara has been a run machine for India against Australia in test cricket. He was the highest scorer for India in BGT 2016/17 and 2018/19 and the second-highest Indian scorer in BGT 2020/21.

His record against Australia is phenomenal. Pujara played 25 tests against Australia between 2010 and 2023 and scored 2074 runs at an average of 49.38 with five centuries and 11 half-centuries.

3. Rahul Dravid – 2143 runs

Rahul Dravid retired with over 13,000 test runs in his career. He enjoyed batting against Australia and has been part of many brilliant games, including the one at Eden Gardens in 2001.

Dravid played 32 tests against Australia between 1996 and 2012 and scored 2143 runs at an average of 39.68. He raised two centuries and 13 half-centuries with a best of 233.

2. VVS Laxman – 2434 runs

VVS Laxman was one of the most consistent Indian batters against Australia in test cricket. More than 27 percent of his career runs in tests came against the Aussies. Who can forget his partnership with Dravid at Eden Gardens in 2001 to help India register a historic come-from-behind win?

Laxman played 29 tests against Australia between 1998 and 2012 and scored 2434 runs at an average of 49.67 with a best of 281. He scored six centuries and 12 half-centuries against Australia in tests.

1. Sachin Tendulkar – 3630 runs

Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for the most runs against Australia in test cricket by an Indian batsman. In fact, he has scored the second-most test runs against the Aussies and finished only six runs behind the top scorer, Jack Hobbs (3636).

Tendulkar has played many match-winning innings against Australia and was always the key wicket for the Aussies in the Indian batting lineup.

He played his first test against Australia in 1991. Overall, he played 39 tests against Australia and scored 3630 runs at an average of 55, notching up 11 centuries and 16 half-centuries, with a best of 241 not out.
