Instances of Indian batsmen getting out on 99 in test cricket

One Indian batsman has been dismissed twice on 99 in test cricket till now.

The Indian cricket team have been one of the most successful sides in the history of test cricket. This has chiefly been on the back of their several legendary batsmen.

The country has been blessed with many great batsmen, including arguably the greatest of all time, Sachin Tendulkar. From Sunil Gavaskar to Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid and now to Virat Kohli, Indian batsmen have defined eras.

However, there have been a few instances when even these great batsmen got out on 99 in test cricket. A total of 11 times has an Indian batsman been dismissed on the score of 99, and one batsman has suffered this cruel fate twice!

Indian batsmen getting out on 99 in test cricket:

1. Pankaj Roy vs Australia, Delhi, 1959

Former opener Pankaj Roy was the first Indian batsman to get out on 99 runs in test cricket. During a test match against Australia in 1959 in Delhi, Roy was dismissed for 99 runs in India’s second innings.

Australia won the match by an innings and 127 innings.

2. Motganhalli Jaisimha vs Pakistan, Kanpur, 1960

When Pakistan toured India in 1960, former cricketer Motganhalli Jaisimha was dismissed for 99 in the Kanpur test.

Batting first, Pakistan scored 335 runs. In reply, India made 404 after Jaisimha scored 99 and Polly Umrigar slammed 115 runs. The match was drawn with Pakistan at 140/3 in the second innings.

3. Ajit Wadekar – 99 vs Australia, Melbourne, 1967

During the Melbourne test between India and Australia in 1967, Ajit Wadekar became the third Indian to get out on 99 in test cricket.

Batting first, India made 173 runs as Australia’s Graham McKenzie picked up seven wickets.

In reply, Australia slammed 529 after Ian Chappell scored 151 runs. In India’s second innings, the visitors were bundled out for 352 runs as Ajit Wadekar played a fighting knock of 99 runs off 146 balls.

India lost the match by an innings and four runs.

4. Rusi Surti vs New Zealand, Auckland, 1968

Left-handed batsman Rusi Surti played a match-winning knock of 99 runs against New Zealand in Auckland in 1968.

India scored 252 runs in the first innings before New Zealand were bundled out for 140 runs. In India’s second innings, Rusi Surti played a gritty knock of 99 runs, which helped India set a huge target of 374 runs.

The hosts were all out for just 101 runs and lost the test by 272 runs.

5. Navjot Singh Sidhu vs Sri Lanka, Bengaluru, 1994

Navjot Singh Sidhu’s grinding knock of 99 runs during the Bengaluru test against Sri Lanka in 1994 helped his side win the test match by an innings and 95 runs.

Talking about the match, India notched up 541/6d in the first innings after Mohammad Azharuddin recorded 108 runs and Sidhu scored 99 off 228 balls.

In reply, Sri Lanka scored 231 and 215 in their both innings. Team India won the one-sided affair.

6. Sourav Ganguly vs Sri Lanka, Nagpur, 1997

When Sri Lanka toured India in 1997, Sourav Ganguly became the sixth Indian to be dismissed for 99 runs in a test innings during the Nagpur test.

Ganguly made 99 off 188 balls with 13 fours. The Nagpur test between India and Sri Lanka ended in a draw.

7. Sourav Ganguly vs England, Nottingham, 2002

Former captain Sourav Ganguly is the only Indian batter to be dismissed on 99 twice in test cricket. The second time he got out on 99 was during the Nottingham test against England in 2002.

Talking about the match, India piled up 357 runs after Virender Sehwag plundered 106 and Ganguly made 68 off 149 deliveries. In reply, England scored 617 runs as Michael Vaughan played a wonderful knock of 197 runs.

In the second innings, India declared at 424/8 after Rahul Dravid scored 115 and Ganguly scored 99. The match ended in a draw.

8. Virender Sehwag vs Sri Lanka, Colombo, 2010

When India toured Sri Lanka in 2010, Sehwag was dismissed for 99 during the Colombo test.

Batting first, Sri Lanka declared at 642/4 as Kumar Sangakkara (214) and Mahela Jayawardene (174) played marathon innings.

In reply, India piled up 707 runs after Sachin Tendulkar slammed 203 and Suresh Raina scored 120. Sehwag made 99 off just 101 deliveries in the same innings.

The match was drawn.

9. MS Dhoni – vs England, Nagpur, 2012

In the Nagpur test against England in 2012, former captain MS Dhoni became the first Indian wicket-keeper batter to get out on 99 runs in test cricket.

Talking about the game, England notched up 330 runs after their four batters scored fifties.

In reply, India declared at 326/9 as Virat Kohli played a terrific knock of 103 and Dhoni scored 99 off 246 balls.

The match ended in a draw after England scored 352/4d in their second innings.

10. Murali Vijay – vs Australia, Adelaide, 2014

During the Adelaide test match against Australia in 2014, former Indian opener Murali Vijay was dismissed for 99 runs.

Australia declared at 517/7 in the first innings after Steve Smith played a stunning knock of 162*. In reply, India’s Virat Kohli played an outstanding innings of 115 runs along with Murali Vijay, who scored 53, which guided them to 444.

Australia then scored 290/5d in their second innings and set a target of 364 for India. While chasing, Vijay’s gusty knock of 99 and Kohli’s 141-run knock went in vain as India lost the match by 48 runs.

11. Rishabh Pant – vs New Zealand, Bengaluru, 2024

When New Zealand toured India in 2024, Rishabh Pant became the second Indian wicket-keeper batsman after MS Dhoni to get out on 99 runs in test cricket.

During the Bengaluru test, Pant played an aggressive knock of 99 runs in India’s second innings. The left-handed batter slammed nine fours and five sixes during his stay at the crease.
