The Indian Cricket Team have been travelling to England for test cricket since 1932. The history between the two teams has been very rich. The conditions in both countries are very different to bat.

But there have been some exceptional batting performances in this rivalry. It has always been a challenge for Indian batters in the English conditions, where the ball swings for a long period of time.

That is why it becomes hard to score in every game. Despite that, some of the Indian batters have slammed tons of runs in a tour of England. On that note, let’s take a look at top five Indian batsmen with most runs in a test series in England.

5. Sunil Gavaskar – 525 runs, 1979

There are not many places where the Little Master, Sunil Gavaskar, hasn’t scored much. He was the first Indian batter to score 500 or more runs in a test series in England. He did it during the 1979 tour, which had four test matches.

Gavaskar batted in seven innings and scored one century and four half-centuries. It also includes the iconic 210 at the Oval, which almost took India to a world record chase. He finished with 525 runs at 77.42 and was the top scorer in the series.

4. KL Rahul – 532 runs, 2025

During India’s tour of England in 2025, KL Rahul scored 532* runs in five games, which consisted two hundreds and two fifties.

He scored a hundred in the opening game of the series at Headingley and then another at The Lord’s. He also scored a resilient 90 during fourth test of the series, which was played at Manchester’s Old Trafford, which ended in a draw.

3. Virat Kohli – 593 runs, 2018

Following a disastrous previous England tour, Virat Kohli returned as India’s run machine in the 2018 tour of England. He was unstoppable with this form and slammed his critics, who doubted his scoring in English conditions, with his bat.

In the five-match series, Virat finished with 593 runs at an average of 59.30, which included two hundreds and three half-centuries. India only won one game in that series, and he scored 97 and 103 in that match.

2. Rahul Dravid – 602 runs, 2002

England has always been a favourite country for Rahul Dravid to bat on. He made his debut in England and has many fond memories of his time on English soil. One of his most memorable tours was in 2002, when he broke all previous batting records.

India had a success of drawing the series 1-1, and Rahul finished with 602 runs in four games at an average of 100.33. He scored three centuries and one half-century, including a best of 217.

1. Shubman Gill – 754 runs, 2025

There might not be many stories of brilliant starts to a test captaincy like the one Shubman Gill has had. Gill made his test debut in India’s 2025 test tour of England and started with a bang.

In the very first game of the tour, he hit a hundred at Headingley, Leeds. In the second test, he took a step higher as he slammed his maiden double hundred in the game and then scored another hundred in the second innings as well.

After not making much noise in the third test of the series at the Lord’s, Gill scored a brilliant hundred in the fourth test at Old Trafford. He then managed to add 33 runs more in final game of the series to finish with 754 runs.
