Virat Kohli has most double centuries (200) in test cricket for India.

Batting in test cricket requires a great amount of concentration and determination. Technique, analysis and small battles play a huge role for every single batter. In the history of the sport, there have been several players coming as an unknown entity and then walking out as one of the finest or as the best in a certain era. Sir Don Bradman holds the record for the most number of double centuries in test cricket. He scored 12 test double centuries in his career and crossing this barrier will be a massive task for any batter.

Indian cricket is known for producing legendary batters since entering international cricket 92 years ago. From Vijay Merchant to Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi to Sunil Gavaskar to Sachin Tendulkar and now Virat Kohli, India have dominated the game in every era. A lot of Indian batters have scored double centuries in test cricket on many occasions, let’s have a look at the top five Indian batsmen with the most double centuries (200) in test cricket.

5. Sunil Gavaskar – 4 :

Fondly known as Little Master, Sunil Gavaskar is one of the finest players in the world to grace the game. Sunil Gavaskar was India’s prolific run-scorer in test cricket and finished his cricketing career as a leading run-scorer in test cricket. Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar smashed four double centuries in his career of 125 tests. Gavaskar scored two double-hundreds for India in the second innings. His first came against West Indies in 1971.

4. Rahul Dravid – 5 :

Former Indian captain Rahul Dravid scored five double centuries in 164 tests he played for India. Dravid was one of the biggest match-winners for India in test cricket, He also played the role of a crisis manager for Indian side on many occasions. Rahul Dravid smashed his first-ever double ton against Zimbabwe in 2000 at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium (now Arun Jaitley Stadium), New Delhi. Dravid’s highest individual score in test cricket is 270, which he scored against Pakistan in Rawalpindi during India’s tour of Pakistan in 2004.

3. Sachin Tendulkar – 6 :

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar has hit six double centuries in his test cricket career. Sachin Tendulkar played 200 test matches in his 24-year-long cricket career and went on to play several big knocks for India. Sachin’s first-ever double ton came against New Zealand at Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad during the Blackcaps’ tour of India in 1999. Sachin Tendulkar’s double ton (241) at the SCG in 2004 is still fresh in every Indian cricket fans’ memory. His highest individual score (248) came against Bangladesh in 2004.

Former Indian opening batter Virender Sehwag is slated second in this list. Right-hand batter Virender Sehwag played many entertaining knocks in his test career. Sehwag smashed five double centuries and converted two of them into triple centuries in his test career of 104 matches for India. Virender Sehwag converted many starts into marathon test knocks. His first ever double ton came against Pakistan in Multan, which he converted into a triple century. He scored 309 in the Multan test during India’s tour of Pakistan in 2004.

After making his test debut in 2011, he hit his maiden test double century in 2016 against West Indies in North Sound, Antigua and since then, he hasn’t stopped. He went on to score two more in the year 2016. He also hit three test double centuries in 2017 with two coming back-to-back against Sri Lanka.

Virat Kohli’s most recent double ton in tests came against South Africa in 2019, where he registered his highest test score – 254* in Pune. Along with Kohli, former England batter Wally Hammond and former Sri Lankan batter Mahela Jayawardene also have seven test double tons to their name. In the overall tally, Don Bradman leads the list with 12 double tons followed by Kumar Sangakkara (11) and Brian Lara (9).
