Indian have won two series on Australian soil in test cricket.

The Indian cricket team have a rich history of producing some of the best bowlers in the world. Known for their spin bowling reserves, the Asian giants have also produced some of the all-time great fast bowlers.

While Asian teams generally struggle on the pace and bounce-friendly Australian pitches, the Indian bowlers have scripted plenty of memorable performances on the Australian shores.

On that note, let’s look at the top seven Indian bowlers who have taken the most five-wicket hauls in test cricket in Australia.

7. Erapalli Prasanna – 2

Known for the art of deceiving batsmen in flight, Erapalli Prasanna was India’s lead spinner during the 1960s and 70s. Prasanna, who took 189 wickets in his test career, has two test fifers in Australia.

Prasanna took a total of 31 test wickets in Australia at an average of 31. His best performance in Australia came during the third test of India’s tour in 1968 in Brisbane, where he registered figures of 6/104 in the second innings.

6. Mohammed Shami – 2

One of India’s finest seam bowlers, Mohammed Shami has taken two test fifers in Australia. Known for his immaculate seam position, Shami loves bowling in Australia. The Bengal pacer has taken a total of 31 wickets on the Australian shores.

Shami’s best bowling performance came in 2018 at Perth when he ran through the Australia batting lineup, recording figures of 6/56.

5. Jasprit Bumrah – 2

Modern-day great Jasprit Bumrah is already listed among India’s greatest-ever fast bowlers. Known for his versatility across formats, Bumrah has two test fifers in eight games in Australia.

Bumrah boasts an impressive record in Australia with 37 wickets in 15 innings at a bowling average of just 19.18.

Bumrah’s best performance in Australia came in the Boxing Day test in 2018 at Melbourne Cricket Ground, when he guided India to a dominating win with his brilliant bowling display of 6/33 in the first innings.

4. Bhagwath Chandrasekhar – 3

Bhagwath Chandrasekhar was one of India’s biggest match-winners of his time. Leading the Indian bowling lineup during the 1960s and 70s, the leg-spinner took 242 wickets in his test career.

Adding to his legacy, Chandrashekhar had an impressive record in Australia with three test fifers to his name. His most remarkable performance in Australia came in 1977 at Melbourne, where he helped India to a 222-run victory with figures of 6/52.

3. Bishan Bedi – 3

Another Indian spin-bowling legend who features on this list is Bishan Singh Bedi. Bedi had an excellent record in Australia: 35 wickets at an average of 27. Known for his dip and turn, the left-arm spinner has taken three five-wicket hauls in Australia.

Bedi’s best performance on Australian soil came in 1977 on the pace-friendly venue of Brisbane, where he registered bowling figures of 5/55 to derail the Australian batting lineup in the first innings.

2. Anil Kumble – 4

Nicknamed “Jumbo,” Anil Kumble is India’s most successful bowler in test cricket with 619 scalps to his name. Kumble led the Indian bowling attack throughout his career.

Kumble has four fifers in Australia in test cricket, with a total of 49 test wickets in the country. His best performance came in 2004 at SCG, where he took 8/141 in the first innings of the game.

Legendary Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev tops the list having taken five five-wicket hauls on Australian soil. He also holds the record of taking the most wickets for India in Australia in test cricket with his tally of 51 scalps.

Kapil’s best performance in test cricket in Australia came in 1985 in Adelaide when he dismantled the Australian batting lineup, taking 8/106 in the first innings. His bowling performance of 5/28 while defending 143 runs in 1981 at Melbourne guided India to a famous win.
