Five Indian Cricket Team players who won't be part of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 squad
India will host the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 from October 5th to November 19th.
The debate and discussion around Indian Cricket Team’s squad for the World Cup 2023 are on. Empty-handed in ICC events for the last 10 years, fans are expecting Indian captain Rohit Sharma to end the drought and lift the World Cup trophy at home just like MS Dhoni did in 2011.
With so much quality around the team, and the options around the team India will enter as hot favourites into the tournament. The team management under head coach Rahul Dravid was in experimental mode against West Indies in the recently concluded ODI series. The team was preparing for the worst-case scenario, in case the long injury list doesn’t get shorter before the World Cup.
The core of the World Cup 2023 squad is already decided. Along with captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja the core of the team India looks intact. With the injury list getting shorter, Team is back to what was deemed as the best possible ODI XI for India. Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant are the only players in doubt.
The deadline to submit the final squad is the end of this month, so soon selectors will sit together and chart out a plan for the Asia Cup, the 3-match ODI against Australia, and the World Cup. With so many options available, there are a few players who will be missing out on selection despite being part of the original plans initially.
Here are the five Indian Cricket Team members who might not be part of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023:
1 . Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan was India’s premier ODI opening batter and his duel with Rohit Sharma looked fixed for the third consecutive World Cup after 2015, 2019. Currently, It looks like Team India have moved on from Gabbar of the Indian team and will be looking to carry on with young Shubman Gill or Yashasvi Jaiswal for the opening combination. Dhawan played his last ODI against Bangladesh last year in December. He could only manage to score 3, 28, 7, 8, and 3 in his last 5 ODI innings.
2 . Arshdeep Singh
Last year in New Zealand, Arshdeep Singh played 3 ODI games for Team India and made his debut in the 50-overs format. He failed to pick up his maiden wicket and since then he has not played any ODI and was restricted to the T20I format only. Arshdeep also didn’t get an opportunity in the ODI squad against West Indies confirming Team Management’s firm stand to keep Arshdeep for the 20 overs only right now. Arshdeep Singh will be representing India in the Asian Games which will be played around the World Cup, ruling him out for the World Cup 2023 event.
3 . Ruturaj Gaikwad
As Team India are looking for a fixed opener, Ruturaj Gaikwad would have become one backing up his stats in the List-A cricket for Maharashtra. Shubman Gill’s consistency and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s lack of opportunity in the 50-overs format has ruled him out of the World Cup squad selection. Ruturaj was picked for the West Indies ODI tour giving a signal that Team Management might carry him as an extra batter, but he played only one ODI. Ruturaj Gaikwad has been given the responsibility to lead the Indian team for the Asian Games event and bring glory.
4. Deepak Chahar
All-rounder Deepak Chahar was hit with multiple injury issues in the last 2 years. Missed out on several key games, even including Indian Premier League for Chennai Super Kings. Keeping his history with Injuries in mind, Team Management decided to not consider Chahar for the World Cup 2023 in India. Shardul Thakur has done a magnificent job for Team India as a bowler and also as a lower-order batter. Deepak lost his race for the World Cup place only because of his long love affair with injuries.
5. Rishabh Pant
If there is one player fans are eagerly waiting to see in the action is wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant. Pant suffered a massive accident in December last year and was ruled out from cricketing action for the next 10-12 months. BCCI has been trying to fast track the rehabilitation process of key players, Jasprit Bumrah is back and will lead Team India against Ireland, KL Rahul will be considered for the Asia Cup, while Shreyas Iyer also has a chance of selection in the Asia Cup but still, Rishabh Pant is not fit and may take more time. Pant suffered grievous injuries in his body after the accident.
