The Indian Cricket Team will host Bangladesh for two test matches, starting September 19 2024.

The Indian cricket team will kick off their home season with a two-match test series against Bangladesh, which will be followed by three T20Is against the same opposition before hosting New Zealand for three test matches.

India have been clinical and utterly dominating at home in test cricket. The Asian giants have not lost a home test series since 2013. Earlier this year, India defeated England 4-1 at home after losing the first test.

Although Bangladesh have a few quality spinners, they seem no match for the Indian cricket team.

In this article, we will look at the 16 men who could be picked for the two tests against Bangladesh.

Indian cricket team’s predicted 16-man squad for Bangladesh tests:

1. Rohit Sharma (C)

The Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma will continue to lead the side. He has been in great form across formats this year. Against England in the test series, he scored 400 runs at an average of 44 with two centuries.

2. Yashasvi Jaiswal

Yashasvi Jaiswal took test cricket by storm against England by smashing 712 runs at an average of 89. He recorded two double centuries in the series along with three half-centuries. Something similar would be expected of him against Bangladesh as well.

3. Shubman Gill

After dropping Cheteshwar Pujara, the Indian cricket team gave Shubman Gill opportunities at number three and the youngster grabbed those against England by scoring 452 runs at an average of 56. He raised two centuries and two fifties and is set to be India’s number three in this series as well.

4. Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli missed the entire test series against England as he had flown to London for the birth of his second child. The Indian cricket team played four different batters at the number four slot. Kohli will resume in his usual position unless new head coach Gautam Gambhir has new plans for Kohli!

5. KL Rahul

KL Rahul played the first test against England and scored 108 runs, but missed the next four tests due to injury. Before that, he hit a terrific century in Centurion. He is expected to take the number five position.

6. Rishabh Pant (wk)

Having made his comeback to the T20I and ODI formats after his car accident, Pant will make his comeback in test cricket now. Dhruv Jurel impressed everyone against England, but Pant is likely to be the first-choice keeper against Bangladesh. He averages 63 with the bat in home tests.

7. Dhruv Jurel (wk)

If the Indian cricket team selectors feel the need for a backup wicket-keeper, it will certainly be Jurel, who averaged 63 in four tests against England and played a couple of match-winning knocks.

8. Sarfaraz Khan

Mumbai batsman Sarfaraz Khan had a stunning start to his test career as he cracked three fifties in five innings in his debut series. He imposed himself on the England bowlers, as reflected in his strike rate of 79. It would be interesting to see if he gets a place in the XI.

9. Ravindra Jadeja

After being rested from the Sri Lanka tour, Jadeja will come into the test series with a break of more than two months. He would be fresh and raring to go against the Bangladesh team. In India, Jadeja averages 39 with the bat and 20 with the ball.

10. Ravichandran Ashwin

One of the Indian cricket team’s greatest match-winners in test cricket, Ravichandran Ashwin completed 100 tests during the England series. With 516 scalps, he is India’s second-highest test wicket-taker. He averages 21 with the ball in India. With a long season coming up, he’d look to add more wickets to his tally.

11. Axar Patel

Axar has had a brilliant start to his test career: averaging 35 with the bat and 19 with the ball in 14 tests, all of which have come in Asian conditions. He will be competing with Kuldeep for the third spinner’s spot.

12. Washington Sundar

Considering his impressive performances in white-ball games in the Sri Lanka tour, India could pick Washington Sundar for this test series against Bangladesh. But he is unlikely to be picked in the playing XI. He has featured in four tests so far, all in 2021.

13. Kuldeep Yadav

Kuldeep Yadav snapped 19 wickets against England in four tests at an average of 19. He is a match-winner with the ball for the Indian cricket team and is likely to be in the XI, whether India play three spinners or four.

14. Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah is one of the first names on the Indian cricket team’s sheet in all three formats. He was a key reason for India’s 4-1 comeback series win against England as he picked 19 wickets at an average of 16. Similar kind of performances will be expected from him in the upcoming series as well.

15. Mohammed Shami

Shami has not played any cricket since the World Cup 2023 final due to his ankle injury. He is currently in the final stages of rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said earlier that the goal is to have Shami make his return against Bangladesh. He could play in the Duleep Trophy matches in the first half of September to prove his fitness.

16. Mohammed Siraj

While his white-ball form has dipped, Mohammed Siraj remains a potent threat in red-ball cricket. Siraj will complete the Indian bowling attack for the two-match test series against Bangladesh.
