A total of nine Indian cricketers have hit a hundred in second innings after getting out on a duck in first innings of a test.

Test cricket is the hardest format of the game, but it always gives you the second chance. And the players who made the most of that opportunity will feature in this article.

Registering a duck is something that a batter doesn’t want. But after getting out on a duck, scoring a century in the second innings of the same match is something that every batter wants to do.

This blog is related to the list of Indian cricketers who have got out on a duck and then hit a hundred in the same match. Overall, there have been nine occasions when an Indian batter scored a century after getting out on a duck in the same game.

Nine Indian cricketers to hit hundred after getting out on a duck in same test match:

1. Madhav Apte

Madhav Apte was the fourth Indian to score a century and a duck in the same test match, but he was the first Indian to score a century in second innings after getting out a duck in the first. He achieved it against West Indies at Port of Spain in 1953.

The game ended in a draw. Apte got out on a duck in the first innings, but he slammed an unbeaten 163 in the second innings and helped India draw the game. India were at 10/3 when he carried the innings.

2. Gundappa Viswanath

Gudappa Viswanath had scored 14 centuries in his career and one of his centuries came against Australia in Kanpur in 1969, which saved the game for India.

He had got out for a duck in the first innings, and India conceded a 28-run lead in the first innings. India needed a good second innings score; that’s when Viswanath scored 137 runs.

India batted for 152 overs and declared at 312/7. Australia needed 285 runs to win, and the game ended in a draw when the visitors were at 95/0.

3. Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar had hit 34 centuries in his legendary career and had many match-winning centuries. One of them was against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 1977.

Gavaskar registered a duck in the first innings. But, India bowled to take a 43-run lead. India then needed a good total in the second innings and Gavaskar took the responsibility and scored 118 off 285.

India gave Australia a target of 387 and bowled them out for 164 to win the match by 222 runs and register a historic win.

4. Dilip Vengsarkar

Some centuries are so special that they become part of history. One of such events was recorded at the Lord’s in 1979. Batting first, India were bowled out for 96, and England declared at 419/9 with a 323-run lead.

Trailing by a massive score, India needed something special, and that’s what they got when Dilip Vengsarkar and Gundappa Viswanath (113) scored a century each.

Interestingly, Vengsarkar, who registered a duck in the first innings, played a marathon knock of 103 off 295 deliveries in the second innings. India were 318/4 when the game got over, and Vengsarkar won Man of the Match award for saving the test.

5. Mohammad Azharuddin

One such match-saving innings was played by Mohammad Azharuddin against arch-rivals Pakistan in Faisalabad in 1989. Azharuddin bagged a golden duck in the first innings and Pakistan had a lead of 136 after the first innings.

In the second innings, India batted out of their skins and played 116 overs, scoring 398/7. Azharuddin slammed a brilliant ton and made 109 off 174. He took India to a score from where they couldn’t lose, and the game ended in a draw.

6. Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar had scored 51 test centuries in his career, and him featuring in this list is not a surprise. One such occasion happened in his career in a test against Pakistan in Chennai in 1999. That was a very tight game, and India were unfortunate to end up on the losing side from a winning position.

Sachin had a brilliant game despite registering a duck in the first innings of the match. Sachin took 1/10 and 2/35 with the ball and scored 136 in the second innings with back pain.

India were chasing 271 in the second innings, and Sachin got out at 254. India lost their last four wickets for four runs and were bowled out for 258, losing the game by just 12 runs.

Sachin even won Man of the Match Award in this game for his performance, but didn’t come out to collect the award as he couldn’t control his emotions following the game and was wiping tears.

7. Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan also had such a moment in his test career where he scored a century after getting out on a duck in the same test match. It came against New Zealand in Auckland in 2014. Dhawan had got out for a three-ball duck in the first innings.

But in the second innings, he scored 115 off 211 when India were chasing 407 runs. But as soon as Dhawan got out, India lost the momentum and were bowled out for 366, losing the game by only 40 runs.

8. Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli has hit many brilliant centuries in his career in tough situations. One of them came against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens in 2017.

Virat got out for a 11-ball duck in the first innings and India conceded a 124-run lead. But, Virat made sure that India weren’t losing the game. He scored a counterattacking 119-ball 104 not out, and India declared at 352/8, giving Sri Lanka a target of 232.

Sri Lanka were down to 75/7 in 26.3 overs, but the game ended in a draw because there was no time left to play.

Gill had got out for a 8-ball duck in the first innings, but in the second innings, he scored an unbeaten 119 to join this elite list. He added 167 runs with Rishabh Pant (109), which helped India set a massive target of 515 runs for the visitors.

Ravichandran Ashwin won the Man of the Match Award for his all-round performance, which included 113 runs and 6/88 (second innings) in the game.
