6 Indian cricketers from ICC Champions Trophy 2017 squad who are retired from international cricket
India finished as runners-up in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017.
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is scheduled to make its much-awaited return in February this year after an eight-year gap. The previous edition of the tournament took place in 2017 in England.
India is placed in Group A of the competition alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, New Zealand, and Bangladesh.
India’s last Champions Trophy campaign in 2017 was a mix of highs and lows. The team won four matches in a row to reach the final but was completely outplayed by Pakistan in the final, suffering a 180-run defeat.
The loss marked the last Champions Trophy appearance for several Indian players. Here’s a look at the Indian players from the 2017 Champions Trophy squad who are now retired from international cricket.
Six Indian cricketers from ICC Champions Trophy 2017 squad who are now retired from international cricket:
1. Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan was the third-highest run-scorer for India in the 2017 Champions Trophy, with 338 runs in five innings at an average of 67.6 and a strike rate of 101.80. Along with Rohit Sharma, he formed solid opening partnerships that played a key role in India’s dominant run until the final.
Dhawan announced his retirement from international cricket on August 24, 2024, after playing his last ODI against Bangladesh in 2022.
2. MS Dhoni
Legendary Indian wicketkeeper-batter and former skipper MS Dhoni retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020. His last match for India was the semi-final of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup against New Zealand, where his runout dashed India’s hopes of reaching the final.
Dhoni made 63 runs in two innings in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 at a strike rate of 98.52.
3. Dinesh Karthik
Dinesh Karthik was part of India’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, but he didn’t play a single game as all-rounders Kedar Jadhav and Yuvraj Singh were preferred in the playing XI.
Karthik was a regular member of India’s title-winning team at the 2013 Champions Trophy.
Karthik announced his retirement on June 1, 2024. His last international appearance for India was against Bangladesh in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.
4. Yuvraj Singh
Legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh bid farewell to international cricket on June 10, 2019. His last appearance for India was against the West Indies in 2017 at North Sound.
Yuvraj was used as a middle-order batter in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. He scored 105 runs in five innings at an average of 35 and a strike rate of 99. His highest score of the tournament, 53, came against Pakistan in the group stage match.
5. Ravichandran Ashwin
Ravichandran Ashwin was India’s second-choice spinner behind Ravindra Jadeja in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. The Tamil Nadu off-spinner had a tough campaign, taking just one wicket in three appearances at an average of 167. He was dropped soon after from the white-ball teams but managed a comeback a few years later.
Ashwin retired from international cricket on December 18, 2024, following the conclusion of India’s test match against Australia in Brisbane.
6. Kedar Jadhav
Kedar Jadhav ended his brief but exciting international career on June 3, 2024. He made his debut in 2014 and played his last ODI on February 8, 2020, against New Zealand in Auckland.
Jadhav batted only twice in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, scoring 26 runs at an average of 26. He also contributed with the ball, taking three wickets during the tournament.
