Three Indian batsmen have been dismissed 7 or more times on the 90s in test cricket.

Scoring a test century is a special feat for any batsman. It is a milestone that represents not only the skillset of a player, but also his mental toughness and endurance in the longest format of the game.

The lucrative and cherished nature of this landmark among fans and critics alike often ends up giving butterflies to players. Nearing the milestone often adds extra pressure in the minds of the batsman, making him prone to mistakes.

Throughout the rich history of Indian batting, there have been many instances where the players have fallen prey to the famous terminology of “nervous nineties.” The emotional roller-coaster of falling short of a milestone is heartbreaking for any batsman but at the same time, it is a great reminder of the unpredictable nature of our game.

On that note, let’s take a look at the top six Indian cricketers who have gotten out in the score of 90s most number of times in test cricket.

Here are the top 6 Indian cricketers to get out on the 90s most times in test cricket:

6. Virender Sehwag – 5 times

Perhaps the most unsurprising name on this list is that of explosive Indian opener Virender Sehwag, who got out on the 90s five times. Known for destroying the opposition with his attacking approach, Sehwag was never shy of taking risks.

Sehwag was a big admirer of reaching the special milestone with a big hit which sometimes led to his dismissal. His risk-taking ability earned Sehwag a special status in the cricketing world. A few missed hundreds here and there won’t hurt Sehwag’s legacy. The way he played the game on his terms made ‘Viru’ the player we all know.

5. Sunil Gavaskar – 5 times

The “Little Master” Sunil Gavaskar was known for his patience and concentration which helped him play many marathon innings for India. In a career that spanned over 16 years, Gavaskar was dismissed five times in the score of 90s.

A run machine for India, Gavaskar scored 34 centuries in test cricket. If he had crossed the line a few more times during these innings, his record would have been even more exceptional.

4. MS Dhoni – 5 times

Known for his cool and calm approach, MS Dhoni mostly batted at number 7 for team India in test cricket. Dhoni’s role in the batting lineup comprised adding valuable and quickfire runs with the lower order. The risk-taking nature of his role played a big part in “Captain Cool” getting out five times in the nineties.

The most memorable of Dhoni’s nervous nineties came against England in the fourth test of the four-match test series in 2012 when he was run out at the non-striker’s end attempting a quick single.

3. Rishabh Pant – 7 times

Following MS Dhoni in the list is his long-time successor Rishabh Pant. Pant is known for his 360-degree batting approach and is one of the most unpredictable batsmen in the world.

Rishabh’s role is similar to Dhoni with the batsman mostly coming in at number 6. Pant’s heavy reliance on scoring boundaries has been one of the reasons behind his seven dismissals in the 90s. Although sometimes risky, his approach to dominate the game has been highly rewarding for him and the team. Notably, he has more 90s than 100s in his test career.

2. Rahul Dravid – 9 times

Known for his patience and determination to play long innings, Rahul Dravid, with nine dismissals, has the second-most nervous nineties among Indian batsmen in test cricket. Infact, he was dismissed on 95 on his test debut at the Lord’s in 1996.

The most famous nervous ninety of Dravid came in 2003 at Melbourne vs Australia. Playing the famous Boxing Day test, Dravid was India’s highest run-getter in the second innings with a score of 92. The Wall though couldn’t convert his brilliant innings to a triple-figure score as he was caught behind off Bret Lee.

1. Sachin Tendulkar – 10 times

The “Master Blaster” Sachin Tendulkar, despite his record-breaking 100 international centuries, also has the unwanted record for getting dismissed most times in the 90s by any Indian batsman. Sachin played 200 test matches in a career that spanned 24 years.

Tendulkar was dismissed 10 times between the score of 90 and 99 in test cricket, the most for any Indian batsman.
