Currently Indian cricketers earn Rs. 15 lakhs per test match from the BCCI.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering a hike in test match fees for players, aiming to incentivize participation in the longer format of the game. This comes amidst concerns over players prioritizing lucrative T20 Leagues, like the Indian Premier League (IPL) over test cricket, according to reports.

The rise of lucrative T20 leagues, notably the Indian Premier League (IPL) has led to fears that some players might start prioritizing this format over traditional test cricket. The BCCI wants to prevent a decline in the prominence of test cricket with this pay hike.

Earlier, the BCCI secretary Jay Shah had warned the centrally-contracted and India ‘A’ cricketers over non-participation in domestic cricket, citing that a move like that from them to prioritize IPL over domestic cricket, would have severe implications on them.

“For example, if someone plays all Test series in a calendar year, he should be rewarded additionally, apart from the annual retainer contract. This is to ensure that players turn out for more red-ball cricket. This would be an additional perk for playing Test cricket,” a BCCI source told Indian Express.

The exact amount of the increase is still under discussion, but reports suggest it could be significant. Currently, the BCCI pays Rs. 15 lakhs per match for tests, compared to Rs. 6 lakhs for ODIs and Rs. 3 lakhs for T20Is.

This financial boost could motivate Indian cricketers to participate more actively in test cricket, ensuring the continued health and prestige of the oldest and arguably most challenging form of the game.
