A total of six Indian cricketers will be featuring in the ICC Cricket World Cup for the first time in 2023.

In the current Team India that’s going to play in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, only two players have the experience of playing in more than 2 editions of the tournament. Apart from Ravi Ashwin and Virat Kohli most of the players lack mega event experience under their name. India will be heading into the tournament with more than 5 of their players still to make their World Cup debut.

Apart from Virat and Ashwin, three others (Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, and Mohammed Shami) have played in the World Cup twice and the rest of the squad carries only one or zero World Cup experience with them. India will be opening their World Cup campaign against Australia in Chennai on 8th October and 4 of their squad members might be playing their first-ever game in the tournament. Let’s have a look at the six Indian players who have been included in ICC Cricket World Cup squad for the first time.

Here are the six Indian players who will be making their ICC Cricket World Cup debut this year:

1. Shubman Gill:

This young prodigy is a talent to watch out for in the ongoing World Cup 2023 in India. Gill has been in astonishing form in 50-overs cricket in 2023 and he is set to play his maiden World Cup game in Chennai. Shubman Gill will be taking up the responsibility as opener alongside captain Rohit Sharma. He has 10 fifty-plus scores in 20 innings under his name this year to mark himself as first choice opening partner with Rohit.

2. Shreyas Iyer:

Shreyas Iyer has spent a long time away from the field since the Border-Gavaskar Trophy played in India earlier this year. Iyer missed out on the IPL, World Test Championship inal, West Indies, and Ireland tours due to injuries. Now after making his comeback, Iyer is also set to make his World Cup debut. He will be taking India’s crucial batting position in the middle order as the number 4 batter. Recently he has scored a century against Australia in Indore.

3. Shardul Thakur:

After the 2019 World Cup, Shardul Thakur has been among the leading wicket-takers for India in ODIs. Shardul Thakur will also be making his debut to boost India’s lower-order batting. India lack a formidable option at number 8 and 9 and team management is looking to give Shardul an opportunity for his all-round skills. Shardul’s ability as a partnership breaker will also come in handy to team India in the big tournament.

4. Mohammed Siraj:

Mohammed Siraj will also be playing the first-ever World Cup event in his career. Siraj is one of the most improved pace bowlers in the game. He has impressed everyone with his ability to produce movement of the wickets and become more lethal with the new ball. Siraj bowled a magnificent spell (6/21) to bowl out Sri Lanka in just 50 runs total in the Asia Cup 2023 final in Colombo. Siraj will be joining Bumrah and Shardul in the initial playing XI.

5. Ishan Kishan:

Wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan might not be getting an opportunity in the first few games as team India might go with Shreyas Iyer at number 4 and KL Rahul as the wicket-keeper-batsman slotted at No. 4. But Ishan Kishan will be in line to make his World Cup debut in this edition. This will be Kishan’s first World Cup in his career and he will be playing a major role in India’s campaign. He has done well for the team in recent ODI tours.

6. Suryakumar Yadav:

Suryakumar Yadav after playing two magnificent knocks against Australia in Mohali and Indore has ignited a ray of hope. Surya’s T20I performance is not a match with anyone but he needed a few decent knocks to identify himself as a proper white-ball player. Surya is picked for his maiden ODI World Cup event and he might also be given the opportunity to make his debut in mid-tournament. He is picked as a backup batting option.
