IPL 2024 will begin on 22nd March.
The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) is all set to begin on March 22nd, with the defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Chennai in the opening encounter.
Due to general elections in India, the Board of Control for Cricket India (BCCI) announced schedule for the IPL 2024 in a phased manner and released schedule of first 21 matches only, which will take place from March 22 to April 7. Schedule for remainder of the tournament will be announced by the BCCI soon.
The IPL 2024 will be very crucial for both Indian and international players as all the cricketers can prepare for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which will be played in the West Indies and the United States of America in the month of June. The cash-rich league will also see few Indian players making a comeback after missing the 2023 edition due to several reasons.
Let’s take a look at three Indian players who are making a return to the IPL in 2024
3. Jasprit Bumrah
Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah was sidelined from the 2023 edition of the tournament due to a back stress injury. The Mumbai Indians franchise will be eager to see their ace pacer return to action in the IPL 2024 season. Bumrah also had a wonderful five-match test series against England, in which he scalped 19 wickets and was the third-highest wicket taker.
However, Bumrah hasn’t played any white-ball games since the ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia. His last T20I appearance was in August 2023, when he made an international comeback and led the Indian side against Ireland in a three-match T20I series.
2. Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer, who was acquired by KKR at the IPL 2022 auction for 12.25 crores and then named captain of the side, is also another Indian star who missed the IPL 2023 and will return in this edition of the tournament.
Shreyas Iyer captained KKR to a seventh-place finish in the IPL 2022. In 14 matches during the 2022 season, Iyer amassed 401 runs including three half-centuries.
However, Iyer missed the IPL 2023 following his lower back issue, for which he had to undergo surgery and miss a good half of the year 2023. He made his return during the Asia Cup 2023 and then played in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India as well.
Iyer is all set to make his return to the cash-rich IPL in 2024 and his team would be hoping he leads them to finals.
1. Rishabh Pant
One of the biggest anticipated comebacks in the IPL 2024 will be that of star Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant. Following his near-fatal car accident in December 2022, Pant had to miss cricketing action for 15 months, including the IPL 2023, where in his absence, his team finished at ninth position.
However, the Delhi Capitals (DC) captain now has been cleared by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to participate in the IPL 2024 as wicket-keeper batter. Before returning to competitive cricket, Pant underwent intense rehab and focused training sessions for almost 15 months.
Rishabh Pant’s performance in the IPL 2024 could pave his way to take a spot in India squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
