IPL 2024: CSK coach Michael Hussey hints at Devon Conway's replacement at the top
CSK opener Devon Conway is all but ruled out of the IPL 2024.
Defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have a big task going into upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. CSK fans will be expecting their side to win record-breaking sixth IPL title this year and give a fitting tribute to MS Dhoni. CSK currently are tied with Mumbai Indians, with both winning 5 IPL titles each. CSK will look to get to a winning start when they face Royal Challengers Bangalore in the opening encounter of IPL 2024.
However, CSK have suffered few injury problems ahead of the IPL 2024. CSK’s key fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana and opener Devon Conway have been ruled out of first half of the season due to respective injuries. Conway top-scored for CSK last season, was Pathirana was instrumental with the ball. CSK will fret over looking at other options to fill void left by these two overseas stars.
Who will open alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad ?
CSK batting coach Michael Hussey revealed that the team might look to try out young Kiwi all-rounder Rachin Ravindra or veteran Indian middle-order batter Ajinkya Rahane as possible replacement of Conway to open alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad. Rachin Ravindra had a terrific ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India and finished among top five leading run-scorers of the tournament.
CSK batting coach Hussey said both Rachin and Rahane can be decent options for the opening slot.
“We’ve got Rachin Ravindra, who’s coming in, who plays a similar style to Devon Conway, There are other options as well. Ajinkya Rahane played so well last year. He could also move up the order,” said Hussey on the sidelines of inauguration of the Pavit Singh Nayar Memorial All India inter-college T20 cricket tournament for men and women at Guru Nanak College in Chennai
Hussey also suggested that the final decision will be taken by the coach Stephen Fleming and captain MS Dhoni. Hussey added, “So, I’m not sure which way the captain and the coach want to go at this stage. But, as I said, I think we’ve got enough depth to be able to cover it in certain ways.” Chennai will play the opening game of IPL 2024 against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
