IPL 2024: Entire tournament to be played in India, start date revealed

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal confirmed that the IPL 2024 will be held entirely in India.

The much-anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) will begin on March 22, the league chairman Arun Dhumal revealed on Tuesday. Despite the forthcoming general elections in India, the competition will be held entirely in India.

The schedule for the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) is yet to be announced as elections are expected to take place in April and May.

Only once the IPL took place fully outside of India due to elections, in South Africa in 2009. Due to the elections in 2014 , a portion of the tournament was hosted in the United Arab Emirates. Despite the fact that there were elections in 2019, the IPL was held in India.

Speaking to PTI on Tuesday, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal disclosed that the schedule for the first 15 days of the tournament will be announced first, with the rest of the roster to be decided when the general election dates are declared. The dates for the Lok Sabha elections are expected to be announced early next month.

“We are looking at a March 22 start for the tournament. We are working closely with the government agencies and we will first release the initial schedule. The entire tournament will be held in India. The Lok Sabha polls are anticipated to have their dates announced early next month,” Dhumal told PTI.

The final of the IPL is likely to be held on May 26, just before the T20 World Cup begins. India’s first World Cup match will be against Ireland in New York on June 5. The T20 World Cup 2024 will start with a clash between the USA and Canada on June 1.

The Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans will face off in the IPL opener, which is traditionally played between the previous year’s finalists.
