Mohammed Shami has been ruled out IPL 2024 after undergoing heel surgery.

Gujarat Titans (GT) were dealt a huge blow ahead of the IPL 2024 when their ace pacer Mohammed Shami was ruled out of the tournament. The IPL 2024 will begin on March 22 and GT will play their first match on Sunday, March 24 against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Ahmedabad.

Due to a heel injury, Shami has not played since the November 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia. This injury also prevented him from participating in the 17th IPL season.

With 48 scalps in 33 matches, Shami is GT’s top wicket-taker. He had surgery to repair a damaged heel, and he is presently recuperating. There will be some time before he can begin bowling at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru at full tilt.

GT are the IPL 2022 champions and the runners-up of the previous season. Shubman Gill was named the team’s new captain following Pandya’s departure to the Mumbai Indians. Gill will be leading an IPL squad for the first time this season.

Sandeep Warrier brought in to replace Mohammed Shami by GT for IPL 2024

Sandeep Warrier, a fast bowler, has been brought in by GGT as a like-for-like replacement for the ailing Mohammed Shami.

Warrier, an Indian international player of Kerala descent who currently plays for Tamil Nadu, has participated in five IPL matches so far, all with the Kolkata Knight Riders from 2019 to 2021. The 32-year-old has also been without a game while with the Mumbai Indians (2023) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (2013–15).

“Shami the veteran Indian pacer recently successfully underwent surgery for his right heel problem and is currently recovering. His replacement, Sandeep Warrier, has so far played 5 IPL matches and will join GT for his base price of INR 50 Lac,” an IPL statement read.

Warrier joins a fast-bowling group that includes Mohit Sharma, Josh Little, Umesh Yadav, Spencer Johnson, Kartik Tyagi, Darshan Nalkande and Sushant Mishra.
