IPL 2024: Shreyas Iyer declared fit to play for KKR but on one condition - Reports

Shreyas Iyer will be leading Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2024.
Shreyas Iyer missed the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) season last year for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) due to a back injury. Iyer had to miss the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 final as well as the subsequent tour of West Indies due to injury. He made his comeback in the Asia Cup 2023 and played the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as well. But recently during the five-match test series against England, Iyer was not included in the squad for last three tests reportedly due to his back pain resurfacing.
Shreyas Iyer also missed few games for Mumbai in Ranji Trophy 2023-24 due to back injury. However, KKR captain Iyer is now deemed fit to play in the IPL 2024 but on some conditions. Iyer recently lost his central contract from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Shreyas Iyer fit for IPL
According to a new report on The Indian Express, Shreyas Iyer visited a spine specialist in Mumbai after a consultation with National Cricket Academy (NCA) and the doctor declared Iyer fit for the action. The doctor also suggested Iyer to take some precautions while playing in the IPL. Iyer might also be considered for the T20 World Cup after the IPL.
As quoted by The Indian Express, A source from the BCCI revealed, “He is fit to play, a specialist spine doctor was consulted in Mumbai who has advised him not to stretch his leg too forward while defending the ball. He has joined IPL franchise KKR and he can play,” Iyer complained about the back problem after the second test against England in Visakhapatnam.
Shreyas Iyer’s injury was not taken well by the BCCI medial team as Indian middle-order complained about back pain after facing a few balls in the game. Iyer also skipped the Ranji Trophy despite BCCI’s stern warning. He also complained about the back pain during Ranji Trophy final game for Mumbai against Vidarbha. Iyer was then taken for MRI scans right after the game at Wankhede.
