IPL 2024: Suryakumar Yadav doubtful for MI's season opener against GT

Suryakumar Yadav has been out of action since South African T20I tour in December 2023.
Mumbai Indians‘ (MI) x-factor with the bat, Suryakumar Yadav is likely to miss the MI’s IPL 2024 opening encounter against Gujarat Titans (GT). Yadav has not yet recovered completely after suffering ankle injury and undergoing surgery for sports hernia and he is likely to miss MI’s season opener. MI coach Mark Boucher looked uncertain about Yadav’s place in the playing XI for Mumbai’s first game of the season.
Right-hand batter Suryakumar Yadav had to miss the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan at home following his injury and surgery. Yadav injured his ankle while fielding for his team during the final T20I against South Africa in third of the three-match T20I series against South Africa in December 2023.
Mark Boucher updates on Suryakumar Yadav
During pre-season press conference, Mumbai Indians head coach Mark Boucher didn’t had a definitive response when questioned whether Surya will be available or not. Boucher said during the event, “Surya at the moment is on the guidance of the Indian cricket team as well. Just waiting for updates on that. I don’t like to micromanage. We’ve got a world class medical team that’s in control of all of that.”
Mark Boucher also expressed that the long Indian Premier League season is likely to create injury troubles for each and every side. Boucher added, “Yes, the past, we have had a few fitness issues. We are always going to be in that sort of domain of having fitness issues as other teams are as well.” MI’s left arm pacer Dilshan Madushanka also got injured during ODI series against Bangladesh.
Suryakumar Yadav is currently at National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru under the guidance of Indian cricket team’s medical unit. He is yet to join Mumbai Indians camp for the upcoming IPL 2024. Mumbai Indians will open their IPL campaign against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi International Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad on 23rd March. The IPL 2024 will begin on 22nd March in Chennai.
