IPL 2025 mega auction: 3 teams who might target Shardul Thakur
Shardul Thakur was released by Chennai Super Kings ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) released Indian bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur before the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction.
Thakur played five seasons for CSK across two stints, picking up 60 wickets in 57 games. Thakur’s standout season in the tournament came while representing the “Yellow Army” in 2021, where he played a vital part in the franchise’s title-winning campaign with 21 wickets.
Shardul has played for a total of three IPL teams in his career: Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS), Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Thakur’s impact in the shortest format goes beyond his bowling prowess, as he can also provide valuable runs in the lower order.
Thakur’s all-round ability along with his experience makes him a valuable asset. On that note let’s look at the three teams who might target him in the mega auction.
Three teams who might target Shardul Thakur in the IPL 2025 mega auction
1. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)
Thakur’s possible addition to LSG can prove valuable for the franchise, especially in home games. Known for its slow and low nature, the Ekana Stadium is well-suited to Shardul’s bowling style of subtle changes in pace variations.
Shardul’s potential arrival will pair him with the duo of Mayank Yadav and Mohsin Khan, giving Lucknow a perfect blend of variations and raw pace in the fast-bowling department.
2. Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
Shardul Thakur is familiar with CSK’s culture and CSK are familiar with what Thakur brings to the table. Being part of the franchise’s two title-winning campaigns, Shardul has a special bond with the CSK fans.
Thakur’s experience with the franchise, paired with his suitability for the slow pitch at Chepauk, could make him an ideal fit once again.
As seen in the recent domestic games, Thakur’s batting has improved markedly, something that would be beneficial for CSK as they look towards an era after Jadeja and Dhoni.
3. Rajasthan Royals (RR)
Rajasthan Royals can target Shardul Thakur in search of an experienced Indian seamer. Shardul’s natural short-of-good-length deliveries are well-suited to the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, where the larger boundaries add an extra layer of protection for the bowlers.
The pitch in Jaipur is a bit similar to the one in Chennai as there it is two-paced and helps the pacers considerably. If picked by RR, Thakur can thrive at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
