IPL 2025 mega auction: 3 teams who might target Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer was released by KKR before the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Shreyas Iyer’s release by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction came as one of the biggest surprises.
Iyer played an integral role as the captain of KKR last season, leading the franchise to their third IPL title. Despite limited opportunities last season due to KKR’s strong opening stands, Iyer finished with 351 runs at an impressive batting average of 39 and a strike rate of 147.
The decision to part ways with Iyer, however, was explained by KKR CEO Venky Mysore as a mutual one. Highlighting the importance of respecting the player’s decision, Mysore said that Iyer wanted to explore his market value in the upcoming auction.
Iyer has represented two IPL franchises in his career – Delhi Capitals (previously Daredevils) and KKR. Iyer also boasts brilliant numbers in the tournament, having amassed more than 3000 runs at an average of 32.
His ability to counter the spinners as well as his recent rise as a leader can make him one of the costliest players in the upcoming mega auction at Jeddah.
On that note, let’s look at the three teams who might target Iyer in the mega auction.
Three teams who might target Shreyas Iyer in the IPL 2025 mega auction:
1. Punjab Kings (PBKS)
Having retained only two uncapped players, Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh, the Punjab-based franchise faces rebuilding the complete squad at the mega auction. They could go after Iyer as they will be hunting for a new skipper.
Iyer’s potential arrival at PBKS could serve as a central point for the franchise to build a team around him. If bought, Iyer will partner with Shashank in PBKS middle order.
PBKS’ new coach Ricky Ponting had previously worked with Iyer at Delhi Capitals, and it seems likely that they will go after the right-hander.
2. Delhi Capitals (DC)
Delhi Capitals are in search of a reliable middle-order batter and captain after Rishabh Pant’s departure. The franchise has only retained two proper batsmen ahead of the mega auction, Abhishek Porel and Tristan Stubbs.
Iyer’s possible inclusion can fill the gap left by Pant in DC’s middle order. Furthermore, Delhi’s home ground Arun Jaitley Stadium is known for favoring spin bowlers in the second half of the tournament. Iyer’s excellent game against spinners can make him a valuable asset for the franchise.
Iyer captained Delhi in IPL 2020 and took them to their maiden IPL final, but they lost it to Mumbai Indians.
3. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)
With Faf du Plessis’ exit, RCB will enter the mega auction in search of a new captain for the upcoming season, unless Virat Kohli is ready to lead the side once again.
Shreyas Iyer, who led KKR to victory last season, can be a lucrative option for the franchise.
Iyer’s potential addition will add much-needed stability to RCB’s middle order, which has been a longstanding problem for the franchise. If purchased by RCB, Iyer would partner with Rajat Patidar in the middle order, forming one of the best duos against spinners in the IPL 2025.
