IPL 2025: Captains of all 10 teams
Defending champions KKR will have a new captain in IPL 2025.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2025, which will be the 18th edition of the competition, is scheduled to kick off on March 14, with the final slated for May 25. Similar to the last three seasons, the IPL 2025 will have 74 matches.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are the defending champions, having won their third IPL title in IPL 2024. However, they will head into the next season with a new skipper as their title-winning captain, Shreyas Iyer, parted ways with the franchise and then was roped in by another at the mega auction.
Not just KKR, but multiple franchises will have a different captain in IPL 2025. Five franchises will continue with the captain who led them last season, but five others will have a new skipper in the upcoming season.
List of all 10 captains in IPL 2025:
Sunrisers Hyderabad – Pat Cummins
After failing to reach the playoffs in three consecutive seasons from IPL 2021 to 2023, SRH splurged INR 20.50 crores on the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023-winning skipper Pat Cummins at the IPL 2024 mini-auction and handed him captaincy.
Cummins imbibed a culture of security and fearlessness in the SRH batsmen who took the IPL 2024 by storm and shattered several batting records.
Under Cummins, SRH finished second in the points table last season and finished as the runners-up, losing the final to KKR. The Australian seamer will continue to lead SRH in IPL 2025.
Rajasthan Royals – Sanju Samson
Under Samson, RR finished as the runners-up in IPL 2022 and fell one step short of the IPL 2024 final, after being third in the points table.
Last season, RR started off superbly and were at the top of the table at the half-way mark, but their campaign got derailed in the second half of the season. Samson, whose India career is also ascending now, would be looking to take the franchise to their second IPL title in IPL 2025.
Chennai Super Kings – Ruturaj Gaikwad
Ruturaj Gaikwad was appointed as CSK captain ahead of the IPL 2024 season as MS Dhoni passed on the baton. Gaikwad’s CSK fell agonizingly short of making it to the playoffs after losing their last league game against RCB, who went through with a better net run rate.
Gaikwad will look to do better as a captain in his second season.
Gujarat Titans – Shubman Gill
The expectations from Shubman Gill weren’t really high in his maiden season as Gujarat Titans’ captain in IPL 2024 given the immense success the franchise achieved under former skipper Hardik Pandya.
Under Gill, the Titans finished eighth in the points table, managing five wins in 14 games. Gill is a more learned captain now and expectations can be made for a playoff finish in IPL 2025 as GT have built an excellent squad at the mega auction.
Mumbai Indians – Hardik Pandya
Mumbai Indians made a coup by trading in Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans ahead of the IPL 2024 auction. However, Pandya couldn’t replicate his success of GT at MI.
In IPL 2024, which was Pandya’s maiden stint as Mumbai’s captain, the five-time champions ended up at the bottom of the table with only four wins to their name.
However, the MI owners and management have retained their faith in Pandya and the all-rounder will lead the side in IPL 2024. But, pressure will be there on Pandya to deliver success in IPL 2025, more so in the presence of Suryakumar Yadav, India’s T20I captain.
