Delhi Capitals (DC) have faced a massive blow ahead of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 resumption as their star pacer Mitchell Starc has opted out of remainder of the tournament. IPL 2025 will resume on May 17 and will observe the remaining matches.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced a revised schedule for the remaining 17 games of IPL 2025. BCCI had suspended the tournament for a week on May 9 due to border tensions between India and Pakistan in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor. As a result, many foreign players returned to their home countries due to security reasons.
Mitchell Starc denies returning to DC squad for IPL 2025
Now, Starc has denied returning to DC squad for the remainder of the tournament. Notably, the Australian pacer had conveyed the message to the franchise following one week of IPL 2025 suspension that he wouldn’t be finishing the league. Starc is part of Australia squad for ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final.
The ICC WTC 2023-25 final will be played between Australia and South Africa at the Lord’s, London. The match will begin on June 11, but both teams will travel to England early to start their preparation for the crucial encounter. As per the original schedule, IPL 2025 was going to conclude on May 25 with the final. However, the tournament will now end on June 3 as per the updated schedule.
Starc is the leading wicket-taker for the Capitals with 14 wickets in 11 games at an average of 26.14 and an economy of 10.16. Meanwhile, South Africa player Tristan Stubbs has confirmed that he will return to the tournament. He is part of South Africa’s squad for ICC WTC 2023-25 final. However, he will only stay will the end of the league stage.
There is no confirmation if Faf du Plessis will return to DC squad. DC, led by Axar Patel, will play three more games in the league stage of IPL 2025. They will clash with Gujarat Titans (GT) on May 18, Mumbai Indians (MI) on May 21, and Punjab Kings (PBKS) on May 24.
The IPL 2020 runners-up occupy the fifth spot in the points table with 13 points. They have won six games and lost four out of 11. Their one match ended in no result. DC are still in the race to qualify for the playoffs. They will need to win two out of three games to qualify for the next round.
