IPL 2025: 3 players who can captain Delhi Capitals in the tournament

Delhi Capitals were captained by Rishabh Pant last year.

The world’s biggest T20 cricket league is all set to return for its 18th season from March 22. The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 will see Kolkata Knight Riders defending their title. With only 11 days remaining for the tournament to start, Delhi Capitals (DC) remain the only side to yet to name their captain for the season.

The franchise released Rishabh Pant and is looking to have a fresh start. They are searching for their maiden IPL title and have not been able to make it to the playoffs in the last three seasons.

Hence, the pressure will be on them for sure. That is where the franchise needs to decide who can handle all the pressure and take the best out of the squad. Though there are a few experienced faces in the squad that can do this role, the franchise is yet to name a player as captain officially. Here we will talk about three potential choices DC have for captaincy in the IPL 2025.

1. KL Rahul

The big reason that DC invested INR 14 crores on KL Rahul at the IPL 2025 mega auction was his the option he gives to captain the side. He was like a replacement for Pant. Rahul can keep, bat in the top order, and captain the team, like Pant used to do.

That was one of the key reasons that DC went after Rahul at the auction. Though they have not decided until now whether Rahul will be the new DC captain, still, he is in contention because of his immense captaincy experience in the IPL.

2. Faf du Plessis

There were some really good purchases at the IPL 2025 mega auction by some franchises, and buying Faf du Plessis for just his base price of INR 2 crores was probably among the top. His experience is invaluable, and he is still fit to play a couple more seasons.

But the most important aspect with him is his captaincy experience. He led RCB to the playoffs in two of the three seasons he captained, whereas DC didn’t qualify in any of those. Du Plessis can open for the team and is still a gun fielder. Hence, there is a good chances that Du Plessis can be named the Capitals’ captain for the season.

3. Axar Patel

The third name among the candidates will be an all-rounder who has been in the setup for quite a few years now, Axar Patel. Axar is currently the highest-paid player in the Capitals. He has been with the team since 2019 and has been retained throughout these seasons.

Axar has captained the side previously in Pant’s absence in one game and has played as vice-captain of the team as well. He is someone who is a core member of the team, and his international success has certainly increased his chances to be the new DC captain.
