IPL 2025 has astonished many IPL fans with some of the unexpected events. For instance, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) couldn’t put up impressive show this season after winning their opening encounter against Mumbai Indians (MI). Once who were known to dominate the points table from the start, languished at bottom this season mostly.

The format in the IPL sees only four teams making it to the playoffs, while the bottom six get eliminated. Although at times even the last league stage match has proved to be virtual decider for teams to qualify for the playoffs or get eliminated, in some seasons it has been decided early as well.

On that note, let’s take a look at the list of teams who have been eliminated from the playoffs race of IPL 2025.

Teams who have been eliminated from the playoffs race in IPL 2025

1. Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings were the first team to get eliminated from the playoffs race in IPL 2025. The MS Dhoni-led side were eliminated from the playoffs race after losing their must-win match against Punjab Kings (PBKS). The Men in Yellow clashed with the Shreyas Iyer-led side in the 49th game of the tournament at their home ground, MA Chidambaram Stadium. CSK were bowled out for 190 in the first innings courtesy of a hat-trick from Yuzvendra Chahal. Sam Curran slammed a stunning knock of 88 runs for the side.

Later, the home team failed to defend the target. Shreyas Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh slammed half-centuries to power the visitors to victory by four wickets.

They managed to win only two games in the first 10 matches and earned four points. Even if they go on to win the remainder of their matches this season, the maximum points they would reach will be 12, which won’t be enough for them to qualify for the playoffs.

2. Rajasthan Royals

After CSK, Rajasthan Royals became second team to get eliminated from the playoffs race in IPL 2025. They got eliminated after losing their home game against Mumbai Indians. After winning the toss and opting to field first, they conceded 217/2 in match No. 50 of the season. Later, they got bowled out for 117 and lost the game by 100 runs.

In their first 11 matches of the season, they managed to win only three games and earned six points. They have three more games remaining in the tournament, and even if they win all three remaining games, they will reach a maximum of 12 points, which won’t be enough to make it to the playoffs.

3. Sunrisers Hyderabad

After CSK and RR, the runners-up of the 2024 edition of the IPL, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) became third team to get eliminated from the playoffs race in IPL 2025. They got eliminated after their home game against Delhi Capitals got washed out due to rain. Prior to the game, they were in a must-win situation. However, with rain washing out the game, SRH earned one point from the game.

Following the game, SRH have three more games to play and even if they go on to win the remaining games, the maximum points they would reach will be 13, which won’t be enough for them to make it to the playoffs.

4. Kolkata Knight Riders

After CSK, RR and SRH, the defending champions of the IPL, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) became fourth team to get eliminated from the playoffs race in IPL 2025. They got eliminated after their away game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru got washed out due to rain. Prior to the match, they were in a must-win situation. However, with rain washing out the game, KKR earned out point from the game.

Following the washout against RCB, KKR have one more game left to play in the league stage and even if they win the game, they will end with 14 points, which won’t be enough for them to make it to the playoffs.

5. Lucknow Super Giants

On May 19, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) got eliminated from the playoffs race. They became fifth team after CSK, RR, SRH and KKR to get eliminated from the playoffs race this season. They got eliminated after losing their home game against SRH.

Prior to the game against SRH, LSG were placed seventh in the points table after five wins in first 11 games. They needed to win all three gams to remain in contention for the playoffs. However, their loss against SRH meant they were left with two league stage matches and even if they go on to win the remaining two games, the maximum points they would reach is 14, which won’t be enough to make it to the playoffs.

6. Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals became the sixth team to get eliminated from the playoffs race. They were knocked out after losing their away game against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Staidum, Mumbai on May 21.

They entered the match in a win-or-die situation and lost the game to get eliminated from the race.
