IPL 2025: Lucknow Super Giants appoint Rishabh Pant as captain

Lucknow Super Giants had bought Rishabh Pant for INR 27 crores in IPL 2025 mega auction.
On Monday, January 20, Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) named Indian wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant as their captain ahead of the 2025 season.
Rishabh Pant achieved history by becoming the most expensive player ever in the history of IPL when LSG bought him for record sum of INR 27 crores at the IPL 2025 mega auction.
The last few days have been great for Pant as he was selected for India’s Champions Trophy squad on Saturday, and now his appointment as LSG captain adds to his growing list of achievements.
Pant made a strong comeback in the IPL 2024 after suffering horrific a car accident in December 2022. He was one of the top performers for Delhi Capitals (DC), scoring 446 runs in 13 matches at an average of 35.31.
His prior leadership experience includes leading DC in the IPL 2021, 2022, and 2024 seasons, where the franchise finished first, fifth, and sixth in the league table respective.

Confirming Pant’s appointment as LSG’s captain for IPL 2025, Star Sports posted on platform X, saying, “Muskuraiye Lucknow, Rishabh Pant aapke kaptaan hai (Smile Lucknow, Rishabh Pant is your captain). Big news from Lucknow Super Giants as Pant is all set to lead them in IPL 2025.“
Pant’s appointment comes nearly two months ahead of the start of IPL 2025. Earlier, BCCI President Rajiv Shukla announced that the new season of the IPL will begin on March 23.
Pant will take over as captain from KL Rahul, who was released by the franchise ahead of the mega auction. After reaching back-to-back IPL playoffs, LSG had a disappointing run in IPL 2024 season, finishing seventh in the league with 14 points from 14 games.
The team has made some exciting additions to the squad, including David Miller, Mitchell Marsh, and Akash Deep. They will be hoping for a much improved performance this year.
