IPL 2025 mega auction: Delhi Capitals steal Faf du Plessis at his base price

Faf Du Plessis scored 438 runs for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2024.
With over a decade of Indian Premier League (IPL) experience, Faf Du Plessis has earned his name among the league’s most reliable openers. Making his debut in 2012, with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Du Plessis is known for taking on the bowlers in the powerplay.
Recently, Faf has improved his game against spin which makes him suitable for Indian wickets. Despite being 40 years old, Faf is still regarded as one of the best fielders of IPL. His vast captaincy experience makes him a vital part of the leadership group.
Delhi Capitals buys Faf Du Plessis for INR 2 crores
Faf Du Plessis will join Delhi Capitals (DC) for the upcoming IPL season for a salary of INR 2 crores. DC acquired the South African legend at his base price after RCB decided against using Right to Match (RTM) card on their former captain.
Faf will add much-needed experience to the Delhi batting lineup. He will join his countryman Tristan Stubbs in the batting order.
Faf Du Plessis previously in the IPL
Faf Du Plessis began his IPL journey in 2011 signing with CSK. Having made his debut in 2012, he became a bench player for CSK playing deputy to Michael Hussey until 2013. Faf represented CSK till 2015 before moving to Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) for 2016 and 2017 seasons.
Faf returned to CSK in 2018 and played a key role in franchise’s success over the next few years. Faf has been a part of two IPL-winning campaigns – 2018 and 2021. He was also Player of the Match in the 2021 IPL final against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for his match-winning knock of 86 runs.
Du Plessis joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2022, serving as captain of the side for the next three seasons. As of 2024, Du Plessis is part of an exclusive group of players who have scored over 4000 IPL without scoring a century a feat shared by Robin Uthappa, MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir.
Faf earned a salary of INR 55 lakhs for CSK in 2012 and 2013, which increased to INR 4.75 crores for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. He earned INR 4 crores when he represented RPS in 2016 and 2017. Returning to CSK in 2018, he played through 2021 with a salary of INR 1.6 crores. In 2022, after joining RCB as captain, his salary rose to INR 7 crores.
