Venkatesh Iyer is the most expensive buy for KKR at the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Indian all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer made headlines on the first day of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction. Venkatesh, who has represented India in nine T20Is and two ODIs, was bought back by IPL 2024 winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a whopping INR 23.75 crores.
Kolkata edged out Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in a fierce bidding war to acquire the 29-year-old Indian all-rounder. Iyer was the third most expensive player at the IPL 2025 mega auction, after Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants, INR 27 crores) and Shreyas Iyer (Punjab Kings, INR 26.75 crores)
Iyer has been excellent for KKR in the IPL, amassing 1326 runs across 50 games with an impressive strike rate of 138. His versatility and potential leadership have earned the trust of the franchise, who had to let go of their captain Shreyas Iyer before the mega event.
Speaking after being bought by KKR, Iyer expressed his gratitude towards the franchise. He also reflected on a potential leadership opportunity with the team.

Reflecting on re-joining KKR, Iyer expressed his readiness to take on the leadership mantle if given the opportunity.
Iyer said, “I had the opportunity to captain the side in Nitish Rana’s absence when he was unfortunately injured, and I was the vice-captain as well. I’ve always believed that captaincy is just a tag, but leadership is about creating an environment where everyone feels they can play for this team and contribute. If given the responsibility, I would be more than happy to take it on.”
Iyer also expressed gratitude for being welcomed back to KKR.
“Thank you, KKR, for trusting me and showing so much belief in me. I’m extremely delighted to be part of Kolkata Knight Riders again. To be honest, I’m at a loss for words, but I’m elated to be part of the KKR team once again.” he concluded.
