Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have received a massive boost a week before the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as Australia’s T20I captain Mitchell Marsh has been cleared to participate in the upcoming tournament as a specialist batsman.

After being left out of Australia’s squad for the last Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) test in Sydney, the all-rounder suffered a back injury and was ruled out of the consequent test tour of Sri Lanka and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

The injury meant Marsh saw a back specialist in early February and underwent a period of rest to settle the issue. He has returned to batting in recent weeks and has been cleared to play as a specialist batter in IPL 2025.

The Australian all-rounder was bought by LSG for INR 3.4 crores at the IPL 2025 mega auction. Marsh has reinvented himself in T20 cricket in recent years and now plays as a top-order batsman.

He is expected to join LSG’s squad on March 18 and will reunite with his former Australia, Western Australia, and Perth Scorchers coach, Justin Langer.

Marsh’s inability to bowl makes him an ideal candidate to be used as an impact player by the franchise. He will likely be tasked with opening the batting alongside South Africa international Aiden Markram.

The Western Australia all-rounder brings rich IPL experience with 666 runs in 42 appearances and has represented several franchises, including Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rising Pune Supergiants, Pune Warriors, and Deccan Chargers.

He was part of Delhi Capitals last season, but had to return home after just four games due to a hamstring injury. He also led Australia in the ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup 2024.
